The insulation on this Aerus Lux Classic appears to have shrunk or shriveled up a bit. This affects about the last three feet of cord coming out of the winder. I can't imagine this is normal. Does it indicate a bigger problem? The machine functions fine otherwise.

It looks like something got hot! Cords tend to do that when they get hot. I've seen extension cords do this when the appliance they are attached to overheats.

Overheated is right. I'm wondering if a previous owner was running it for an extended period of time with the cord mostly retracted. Makes me also wonder if anything else is overheating.

Sounds like the cord should be replaced

Thanks for the information. Sounds like the cord should be replaced. Are aftermarket cord/winders a good option, or should I take this to an Aerus store for repair?

You can fix it yourself...

I'm sure you'd be looking at $100 or more for parts and labor to get the cord winder replaced by an Aerus dealer. Fortunately, these plastic canisters are super easy to open up and work on so your best and cheapest option is to order a winder from eBay for about $30 or $40 and do the job yourself. You may even get lucky and find a used cord winder on the cheap as I did last spring when I rescued a Diplomat LX from beside a dumpster. The cord had been cut off and I found a second-hand cord winder on eBay for $17, including shipping. I replaced it myself and the machine, which essentially the same as yours, now works perfectly. The YouTube video linked below will show you exactly how to do it. The machine being repaired is an Epic 6500SR but the differences are negligible. One observation I'll make is the technician seems to struggle to keep the machine in one place as he's tapping the strips loose. He has it on its wheels and it wants to roll all over the bench. It may be a little easier if you turn it on its back or side to do that part. Doing it for the first time, you should pull out your phone and take a picture of the old winder in place, before you disconnect anything so you'll get the wires in the right spots when you put the new one in.
