Aerus guardian power issue

Hi everyone, so I just got an Aerus guardian and it has a rather strange issue. The main vacuum motor won’t turn on. The switch on the hose turns on the powerhead as normal but the main motor won’t activate. The plug light and bag light function as normal so I don’t think it’s an issue with the hose. So what could be the issue, something with the internal terminal block or one of the other boards inside?

If it were my machine, I would test the motor and the motor wiring to make sure all the wires are secure, there aren’t any broken wires, they are hooked up correctly, and that the motor tests for continuity.

Did you buy the vacuum from an Aerus dealer-if so contact them right away.If you didn't buy from them they may be able to help anyway.Guardian vacuums have circuit boards in them-there may be an issue with your machines board.On mine-the boards weere failing on random times when I used the vacuum.Bought mine from a dealer.He replaced the boards under warrantee.When the board failed in mine-lights on the canister would flash and then smoke.

It could also be a issue with the hose itself, if this is the older Guardian with hose handle controls. If that's the case, you're in luck, the hose is still being produced. But if it's the main board in the canister or the 2nd smaller triac board that sits on top of the motor, those are NLA.

Check the brushes

Occasionally I’ve had guardians come in with worn down motor brushes which were the culprit of the motor not running. Another thing that happens is if your bag light is coming on then the machine won’t run. The bag full sensor has a tendency to go bad and the majority of Aerus or Electrolux machines I have in have this issue. I believe the sensor/part needed to fix this is no longer available so what I do just to help the customer get their machine back and have it work is a I “neuter” the machine. Basically what I do is open it up and the clear tubes inside are to the sensor. I cut the tubes and plug them so there will be no air leaks and that fixes the issue because the sensor is now bypassed. This does mean the bag full light will no longer operate but it was the culprit of the machine not running at all so it’s better to have a bag full sensor that is deactivated than one that works so well it thinks the bag is full all of the time.

It definitely was the motor brushes. The left one was worn down to the spring, I’ll probably just end up swapping in a new motor since this one seems to have lived a hard life and was covered in a good layer of rust. It’s strange only one of the brushes got worn down the other still had a decent amount of life left in it.

So I’ve now ran into the issue of replacing the motor, a replacement vm3 style motor is close to $200 which for this machine is way more than I’m willing to put into it. However the 2 stage motor from the renaissance and epic 8000 is much cheaper. While these machines are the same style of body it’s my understanding that the internals might be different. Does anyone know if this 2 stage motor is compatible with the later style Guardian

Greg, yes the motor that was used in the Renaissance will fit your machine IF you have the motor housing from a Guardian C134. That specific model, before the C154 Lux9000 came out and the VM3 motor was introduced used the Electro Motor double stage motor.

What I would do is buy a Guardian C134 listing on Ebay for the canister only and strip it for parts, since you would need to buy a motor housing, and you can always keep the cord reel and circuit boards for spare parts. Beware though, if you do buy a new motor, use ONLY the Electro Motor 6500-293. DO NOT USE THE 6500-298! That motor is sold on Centralvacuummotor.com as their 6500-242UP upgrade motor that pulls 117" waterlift. However, that motor pulls too much power for the circuit boards to handle and will blow them! I speak from firsthand experience. Also, make sure you buy ONLY a Guardian....they not only changed the motor housing, they also made slight changes to the body when the Guardian was introduced in 1999, so the Renaissance and Epic8000 motor housing will not work to fit a double stage motor in a Guardian.

Ah I was worried that might be the case as I’ve got a 154, I’m thinking it’s going to just end up being parted out. I’m addition the having a bad motor the customers at some point also removed the cord winder so trying to get the entire unit back together would be way to much money. Plus I’ve got zero time to get the thing done, so if anyone needs Aerus parts let me know the casings, wands and power head are in great shape and the hose has a repair where it goes into the handle but controls seem to work fine.

You can send me an email letting me know how much you want for the wands. I have a Lux Legacy and the two wands are a bit short for me and I have some big rooms in my house and having an additional wand to add to the two would likely help make vacuuming with this model a bit faster.
