Hello fellow collectors,

After picking up a Vampyr 6500 today I thought AEG vacs are rarely if ever discussed here so heres a thread dedicated.

Dont have much to contribute myself as im more on the learning end so any info parted is greatly received.

The 6500 is only the 2nd AEG cleaner in Paul and myselfs collection the first being an early 80s cylinder.

Hopefully Paul will add a couple of pics to illustrate,

So is there any AEG info out there? :)

All I can remember is they were big and heavy and often not as robust as the AEG reputation and retail price suggested. I did see a good deal with broken wheels, floor tools, and the fitting which connected the hose to the cleaner was often very weak. What I do remember is that the price one paid for these cleaners was comparable to Miele and that Miele would be the one to go for if one was looking at cleaners in this price bracket. Possibly this was because the cleaners looked even more sturdy and Miele were seen as the top of all top of the range brands.

During the 1990's AEG sold some upright cleaners which were practically identical to the Electrolux Contour. The only useful difference was the main handle which was straight and not curved. This made the cleaner a good deal easier to move around. But the consumer paid a lot more for an AEG than they would for the same cleaner under the Electrolux brand. Certainly the performance, build quality, and reliability was only as good as a Contour; there was not AEG-like about them.

Model 6006 Vampyr

Unfortunately I only have two photos of the model 6006 Vampyr electronic.

A nice cleaner, though unfortunately missing its chord rewind pedal switch, though the mechanism still works...

The plug recess is VERY much orientated towards continental sized plugs only, with the UK 3 pin plug preventing the little lid from sliding across...

See there Paul, you have them lined up next to the Hotpoint, which as I am sure you know were Bosch, and the Bosch cleaners I always thought were never quite all that either. Not for the price or the reputation of the brand.

Other end of the age scale...

and yep, I know its in the wrong forum :-)

Picked this machine up today, in the form of a model 6500 Vampyr Electronic...

It wold be great to fill in the cleaners that ran inbetween these two models, though I realise that the latter model is still rather too new for this forum.

Would also be good to know what came before the model 6006, which I assume was a late 70s / early 80s machine? I, like rob, am not very au-fait with AEG and their cleaners.

Hi Benny.
Yep - would I be right in saying that pretty much all of Hotpoint's 80's offerings were constructed in West (as it was then) Germany, by Bosch/Siemens?
A mate has the Siemens version of the little 'Super'.

You might be right about vacuum cleaners, but I don't know about a lot else. There was a Bosch connection in the dishwashers for a good deal of years, but people talk about this as a licensing deal, the likes of which I have never fully understood. The same may be true of the cleaners. Whilst I saw the Siemans and Bosch names on many of the packets of bags for 1980's Hotpoint cleaners, I never saw such a product in the UK. It was only during the 1990's I saw that.

Hi Paul.

Hi Paul, You have the same model AEG 6500 that I still have.
I bought mine new in 1995. I paid for the lower end model AEG but they gave me the highier end model accidently when they went to get the boxes as they looked similar.
I think the vac should of been £189.99 if I remember correctly.

Hope you and Rob are both ok:o)

I used to have that dark grey AEG upright! I remember it being VERY similar to a lux contour. I've had several 80s AEG's and found them to be ok. My Favourite was my Autotronic 62 Black line. It was absolutely huge, bigger than a Sensotronic. Heres a pic and vid...

This is my fault for not being clearer in what I wrote, for which I apologise. It wasn't that I was unclear as to why an AEG upright looked like an Electrolux, as I knew they were part of the same group. What I was never certain about was how the UK retailer was ever expected to sell them when they were on sale standing next to an Electrolux Contour of a lesser price. As it was, sales of AEG uprights were poor, that much I do know.

Although until recently washing machines were continuing to filter through in the same style and build quality as the AEG had always been, I did note that vacuum cleaner production of the AEG cleaners seemed to stop around 1993-94. The first I knew that the AEG name was being used again on floorcare was when these uprights I mentioned became apparent. That would have been around 1996.

The AEG name has of course reappeared recently on vacuums in the UK as the Swedish made Ultra range, although these are sold across Europe as Electrolux. I'm not sure how well these sold as I haven't seen any in use and I'm not sure if the major stores are still stocking them. They seem to be far popular in main land Europe where high performing, well made cylinders are big sellers due to 90% of homes using cylinders rather than uprights across Europe (most probably the reason why Miele only ventured into the upright market in recent years)

AEG Vacs

Hi as a kid one of the vacuums we had was an AEG in the mid 60s it was a bit like a Vorwerk only better, small hand held with a set of attachments and a PN,its one vac I've never seen on here. I'm looking for something like it now to replace my Sebo felix ( total waste of money) I need a vac that will clean hand made rugs polished surrounds and stairs. most uprights are to harsh on rugs and suctions only is not good at dog hair, we've got 2 Dals. The most efective is a Miele with a PN that no longer avilible in the UK, but its not good for quick daily clean ups. heavy, short hose that has only one felixy joint and is to hard and rigged. ON the + side very very well made and the new dusting attachment is fantastic.

to replace my Sebo felix ( total waste of money)

Ooohh no you did not just say that! I love Sebo's. I have the x1.1 and my Mum has the Felix. Fantastic vacs.

Have you thought about the Henry Hound/Turbo with the Powernozzle? Fantastic, british made cleaners, reliable, robust, excellent suction and the powernozzle, though large, does a great job!

Sebo

HI I have 3 Sebo's 1 good 2 bad the X1 no problems realy only a new switch in 3 years Then the 1st felex I loved it I had the cream and red but I had problems with the cable and switch + I found Sebo very unhelpful to deal with and gave it to a good home. 2 years later I saw the felix pet in black and silver and thinking I had just been very unlucky i had to have it. After the 1 6/9 mouths it had a the same faults as the 1st one and Sebo just as unhelpful charged me somthing like £50.0 to replace the cable they claimed it had been pulled. Simply not true however it was a good vacuum so I paid up. 6/9 months later same fault so I took it to my local dealer who told me its very common and showed me a row of Sebo's all with the same fault, he also said he has now stopped stocking as Sebo have been aware of the problem of poor cables for a number of years, but I suppose its a good income for them. The dealer did replace the cable but now just week later it need a new switch.
I love the Felix and its one of the best machines for my home. Its still in the back of the cupboard and I may yet give in and send it back to Sebo to be ripped off yet again unless I can find something better. I'm looking at a Vorwerk at the moment. I loved my Sebo but they really need to address there customer service dept. And the cabling problems
