Ad for Eureka vacs from 1970....

When I was a young boy, the only way I could get my "fix" for my vac fascination was cutting out advertisements from wherever I could find them. I kept them hidden in an envelope in my night-table! This was because of how shamed I was made to feel by my family for having this interest....

Anyhow, one of my favourite ads (or "adverts" for my friends in the UK!), was a Mother's Day ad from Eureka in 1970. Being a Gay kid, I was instantly in love with the husband holding the little avocado Princess, and not far from him was a "son" about my age bringing "Mom" breakfast in bed, with a nifty Eureka Vanguard leaning up against him! The ad spoke to me in so many ways! Except for the fact that I had a brother, not a sister as depicted here.

Anyhow, I was overjoyed to see this ad on eBay, so I downloaded it to share with VacuumLand. It's a full two-page spread, so I'll have to do this in 2 posts....

I'd salivate as I brought home a Eureka box containing a brand new Vanguard upright. Such a cool-looking vac....

I really believe in those days, Eureka really did have "the very best in vacuum cleaners."

Maybe our hard-working and much-appreciated webmaster would like to download this ad and add it to his folder of pics for our "vac of the day?"......

I just noticed something....

It's interesting how the ad does not say that the Vanguard has a "Vibra-Groomer" brush roll. I guess the beater-bar patent that Hoover had had not yet expired, so Eureka uprights still had to limit themeselves to "brush only Disturbulators." I know that by 1974, four years after this ad appeared, the Vibra Groomer was definitely being offered in Eureka uprights.

I could not agree more. Eureka uprights and canisters were awesome in that time frame. I still think Eureka tools were the best on the market. Especially the deluxe set.

Now you all have me wondering, did the upright have a beater bar? The one I remember as a young person did...but it could have been a replacement. I just remember how well it cleaned.

Thank you so much for scanning these, brings back a good memory. A friend's parents who were farmers and lived way out in the coutry brought home that exact model 736 cannister. I just happened to be there visiting at the time,,and they all knew i was crazy about vacuums, so they let me be the first one to use it. Now i know how much they paid for it! haha 39.95 for a Midwest farmer's wife to spend on a vacuum cleaner was at the time considered a fortune!
I distintly remember the "woodgrain" top and the little red tool holder tray that fit inside the cannister under the lid,,thought that was really cool. The vac did not have the "Cordaway", or the top side "tool Pak", but did have decient suction, when the bag was new. I know it was their only vac,,and it cleaned a very large farm house for many years.
I think the hose finally gave out before anything else did.
They sold the farm in the early 1980s, and moved into town into a house with wall to wall thick carpet,,and traded it for a new Kirby Tradition!(i was the salesman)
The friends mom always told me she wished she had her little Eureka back again!

Wow Brian! That little Princess cleaned.....

a very large farmhouse for many years? That little Style "H" bag must have needed changing a lot! I just imagine all the dirt being brought into a farm-house from working the fields or working the chicken coop or whatever....

I always wondered if having the tools stored inside caused problems. It means you are opening and closing the bag part of the unit many more times than usual, and so I imagine the suction seal would get worn out sooner. Also, there must have been a danger of tearing the paper bag if you did not reposition the red tool holder properly if you ever took it out. I also wonder how dirty the tools must have gotten by just being stored inside the machine. Maybe this was not the "very best" of ideas!

That Eureka Princess canister brings back so many memories. My uncle gave me one when I was very young, and like always, I used it for a while a threw it out. I miss it a lot.. Such a great machine

Haha, yes, i was always amazed that litle Eureka cleaned a large farm house for all those years,,and that was a family of NINE BOYS! They were dairy farmers,,with a huge operation,,those boys knew what hard work was! Always felt sorry for their poor Mom, no one would help her with the vacuuming,,but that Eureka held up really well. Yes, i know she had to change the bag often,,and i think she kept the red storage tray on the shelf in their hall closet. She hated the Kirby i sold her BTW,,said it was way too heavy for her. She made the boys do the vacuuming after that. haha

Now there's a personal testimony that Eureka could have

Nine boys, and a cow-farm! And one little Eureka Princess to help make life a little easier for an overworked mother.......
