So after holding off for one whole week, I gave in and bought the new Dyson upright, the DC27.



DC27 launched last week. DC31 is pre-order only until 6th July.







Improved blockage-check port; this is clear, so you can see if there's an obstruction, and it just hinges down, so you can't lose it!



For me, this is the most significant and useful improvement - click-fit tool attachment! This is SO MUCH BETTER! And now they're standardising the tool-fitting across their range, tools from different models can be used interchangeably.



The pre-motor filter. Down beside the motor again. Easy to take out, wash, and put back. Maintenance suggested every 3 months.





The whole of the brush-bar housing is clear, so you can see if there's an obstruction. And it just looks freakin' cool, too

I went for the All Floors, rather than the Animal, because I prefer the colour. And I don't have allergies. And I have other turbobrushes for pet hair!

Shame about the brush roll being black. My DC27 Animal is silver to match the cleaner.

I still don't rate mine after using it some more and I may sell it on soon. I agree that the click fit tools are a good improvement, but the brushroll tends to collect dog hairs far more than a round one would.

I cleaned my house using my Miele S7 Cat & Dog and despite the bag being absolutely choc a block full, it still performed superbly with no noticeable drop in perfomance. I love cleaning the door mats in the conservatory that always seem to have soil and grit on them. The S7 makes the dirt jump about, just like the old Hoovers with beater bars. I am going to go over the living room carpet with the DC27 and see if it picks any more dirt up.

It will be interesting to see what Which say about this newish Dyson, but it's a thumbs down from me.

Calum - yes, it's loud. Well, not so much loud as unpleasantly high-pitched. I'm sure this is due to the redesigned cyclone top, without a filter directly above it acting as a sound-muffler. If you've disliked Dysons previously for their sound, don't even consider this one! I don't find it too bad, personally - I find after a minute or so, you don't really notice it.

Roger - your criticism of the brush-bar could be applied to any of the DC04/DC07/DC14 clutch models, which use exactly the same part. I don't know why the brush on mine registers black in the photos, but it, too, is silver, like yours. I have a dog and a cat - both short-haired - and cleaning up after them hasn't proved an issue. As a rule, helix-shaped brush-bars, like the DC27s', and the one used on the Electrolux Intensity, do tend to wind up long strands of hair worse than round ones.

I'm planning on purchasing a Miele S7 in the near future. The high cost, and the fact that you drop several £££'s-worth of non-recycleable fabric in the bin each time you change the bag, and also the sheer weight of the cleaner, are what's put me off for so long.

Quite.

I would far rather cheaper paper bags were used that broke down in the environment. I don't mind changing conventional paper bags more often than the new synthetic bags. At least bags are more hygienic than bagless machines.

Sorry, yes, I can see the brush roll is silver. I had my laptop screen angled in such a way that it made it look black.

Regarding the S7 bags, as I mentioned earlier, you can use them until they are very full without losing performance, so a full box of bags should last a long time. The bags are not recyclable, but the cleaner will probably outlast many other brands by several years, so surely having a reliable machine that won't need replacing every couple of years is better for the environment even if it uses non recyclable bags.

It is a heavy machine, but if a 5ft 5 weakling like me can handle it, I'm sure you can. If you're not bothered about bells and whistles, I'd go for the base model at around £230.
They all have the same performance and Which? says this model has excellent filtration, even without a HEPA filter. Some shops do the BOL model in black which is much smarter than the lemon yellow that looks a bit insipid.

Roger - I don't think your laptop was at fault, I guess it's just the lighting in my photos making it appear black, because it looks that way to me, too!

The S7 I want is the metallic red Autocare. I like the colour better than the TOL Autocare HEPA. I'm not bothered about the lack of HEPA filter and turbobrush, I don't really need those, and I could always purchase them separately later. But I do want the headlight and 'Auto' power setting - I like bells and whistles!

To that end, I'm currently selling my Revolution 500 on eBay, which will be followed by a couple of other modern cleaners. Time has come for a reshuffle!

Davis - Dysons in the UK do not have aggressive brush-rolls. The bristles are actually quite soft - I'm sure others from the UK can back me on that!!

I agree, UK Dysons have soft to medium-soft bristles, though they tend not to be very long at all. I always thought they could do with being longer and fuller. The DC27 bristles look a little longer than the cleaners I had/have.

I do miss the old Hoover Junior/Senior style of brushes, with the continuous 'wall' of bristles. I think the Miele S7 uses this idea.

I don't really care for all this 'offset' clump of bristles nonsense that Dyson uses.

Very nice video, but...

I still think that the excessive height at the motor area could be reduced. Definately not handy for getting under low furniture. The DC03 was far better in this respect.

And no, people shouldn't have to resort to the toolset to get under low furniture - where Granny's Hoover 'Junior' managed to go with ease.

The height of the Dyson motor unit needs to be redesigned. With the Digital Motor, they should be able to reduce height of the motor unit on this style of cleaner. They should also be able to make 'The Ball' machines with a smaller ball, then they too would be less clumsy.

I raised that exact point with members of Dyson design team, who were present on the 25th.

Much of what the design team does is based on customer feedback, and apparently, there's just not enough demand for a lower head for them to redesign it.

But if you feel strongly about it, give them a call! They will listen!

...that Dyson would be designing cleaners that had lower profiles - specifically with the digital motor in mind - machines that would be 'waiting in the wings', ready to be launched when the digital motor was given the green light.

I get the distinct impression that they are pussy-footing about: where is the UK upright with 'level 3 Root Cyclone'?

The Ball uprights would be the obvious place to put a digital motor: high speed motor for suction, conventional motor for agitator.

Instead they gave us...handheld dustettes. Ho hum.
