A Super (J) Holiday Present

A fellow had posted an ad on a local classified website for an "old style beige/yellow Electrolux"; nothing more, nothing less, for $20. I thought to myself that it could be a 57, AP 100, AP 200, or a Super J. I called him up today and arranged to go and see it, not even asking him what model it was. I figured, for $20, I'd take it no matter what.

Anyway, it turned out to be a Super J, very dirty, well-used, with an ugly, taped up replacement hose, a non-functioning cord winder, and, happily, a gold PN4.

Here's a picture of it. I haven't done a thing with it yet, but, after a good solid couple of hours cleaning and polishing, I'm sure it'll look worlds better. Both motors work, and sound just fine to me...no bearing or other noise.

Update

After several hours of hardcore scrubbing and magic eraser-ing, the old boy is looking more like his late 70's self, although the job is far from done. The bag chamber is crusted with dirt; a bag must have burst in there at one time, although the current one was/is intact.

I told a small "lie-ette". The cord winder does work, but sluggishly, and only rewinds the cord partially. The fellow told me he'd been "pushing it in", which accounts for the cord being a little crooked in several places.

Top Deck

This had been taped up; upon removing the tape, I found it was slightly loose, but its not coming off or anything. The blower door is completely jammed, and the little latch that allows it to be opened is snapped off, so I'll have to see if a little WD-40 will work.

This reminds me of the first Electrolux I used at the house next door. My did she make out with free cleaning from me. I know it was gold, circa 1971, I would say was pretty new, as they had LOTS of money. Powerhead may have been chrome? Or not. Wish I could remember. 1205??? I am guessing.

The Super J came out in '76, I believe, and just before that was the Golden J/50th Jubilee (also designated as model 1205 like the blue one before it) in '74. They're identical save for the more powerful motor and slightly longer body on the Super J. There was a bit of a mix and match with hoses and attachments, I believe. The earlier hoses were white with blue and gold stripes, and the later ones were gold with blue and white stripes. Same with the PNs; the earlier were polished aluminum, and the later ones were painted gold.

Altogether, these two machines are probably the gaudiest ever made by Electrolux, but I like them from sheer nostalgia, and they're excellent performers as well.
