A question for the Electrolux users.

When changing bags do you wait until the cleaner to tell you the bag is full, or do you check it yourself to see if the bag needs changed? I usually check the bag myself or change it when I feel the suction is weak.

I Check:

I like to change bags when they're no more than about halfway full; Lux bags are plentiful and cheap, and it means that I get pretty much maximum suction from my two machines.

Keeping the bag changed frequently also is great insurance against the one design flaw you'll find in Luxes - that straight-line design with no filter. It is pretty rare, but if a bag bursts inside a Lux, there is absolutely nothing to keep all that crud from getting sucked right into your motor.

And then there's my theory (completely unproved at this point, mind you) that a bag that's nearly full allows more dust to pass through than one that's new. Since the airflow has to pull the dust someplace, and since there's little to no room in a full bag, it seems to me that more dust than usual would get pulled through the pores of the bag - again, right into your Lux's motor and its bearings. Some dust always gets though a paper bag - that's why many makes of vac have motor filters and afterfilters. But why on earth would anyone want any more dust than is necessary to get pulled through a full bag?

Bags are cheap. Motors are expensive. Do the math, sez I.

I listen to the sound

of the exhaust on the Olympia. That's my daily driver. I can just hear by the amount of air flowing through when I want to change the bag. Sandy's right, bags are cheap. On my vintage machines, I have nothing but unused bags in them, and I don't use the machines to pick up dirt after I have rebuilt them. That's not to say I don't run them, just don't pick up dirt. If anybody saw the Olympia, you would think I was a vacuum cleaner abuser, and rightfully so. As a testament to Electrolux quality and durability I really USE that machine, and it has held up pretty well. My other machines have done their time and deserve a rest. I DO like watching an LX spit that bag out though, so I made one out of a new Lux bag, lined it with cardboard and plastic so no air gets through it, load it in the cleaner just to watch it come right back out!

Thanks Robert I would love to have the switch. I don't think I received your email, and I sent you one a month or so ago. The messages must be floating around out there somewhere, LOL.

I use an Olympia as my daily driver on the first floor, and I always check the bag because of all the pet hair it picks up. But since the switch went bad I've been use the $5.00 AE that I got at a Salvation Army store.

I have another bag related question for you guys, do use OEM bags or off brand bags. I use genuine Kirby bags in my Legend II. I'm not sure what the brand is on the Electrolux bags, but I haven't had any problems with them.

Could a filter be made for the Electrolux that could go between the bag and the motor, or would that reduce the suction and put a strain on the motor?

Rick, that is a great idea with the Lux bag for making the LX eject its bag. I usually just fill a bag up with tissues. I too change my lux bags often, you can tell usually by the sound when it's time.

Does the LX actually eject the bag? On the AE and Olympia the door opens and the motor shuts off.

genuine lux bags perform much better than BOJACK after market bags. When they start to get full they still have great airflow. I clean a clients home once a week with a lux model L, all hardwood floors and 5 cats, and believe me real lux bags make all the difference in CLEANING POWER.

Yes the LX actually ejects the bag onto the floor! I've recently acquired a new camera that has video/audio. I think I will attempt to do a YouTube thingy tonight after I play with the camera. What better way to make a YouTube debut than to do an Electrolux bag spitage? I have seen others on YT, but could not tell you how to get there! If I am able to figure it out I'll post it on this thread.

after I aquired my second Electrolux lx I started using it and after each use the bag cover would pop open and shoot the bag several feet. no wonder why they said this model was found to be problematic. however I love it to bits. the suction is fabulous and with a powerhead it picks anything up that is in its path. During the summer I lived with a friend who has like 20 something cats and had 3 dogs. the carpet looked like hell from all of the hair so I took the LX and attached a kenmore powerhead to it and after one pass the carpet was completely clean. unfortuneately the bag was brand new and already full.

A friend of mine sent me a perfect bag for the perfect cleaner. And I absolutley love it. It is wonderful I just had to change it today because I sucked up a piece to a puzzle that my partner was working on and had to get it out. But honestly it was time and I have three dogs and it made it about 6 months. With daily hoovering.

Besides genuine bags, I've used Perfect Bags too. They seem to perform well. You can get them from Amazon and (I think) govacuum.net. Speaking of the Pefect Electrolux clone, is it any good?

Model AE Filter

After I finished vacuuming tonight I noticed that there was an exhaust filter on the AE, and it's really dirty. I did a search for the AE filters, I couldn't find anything specifically for the AE. Anyone know of a source for these filters?

I make my own out of

a thin sheet of filter media that you can buy at the home centers. It is used for heating/air conditioning vents. I do it just to have one, but I really don't run the machines to "use" it. It makes the machine a little quieter though.

Model AE Filter

I use the "cut to fit" furnace filter that comes with the plastic frame. I also cut the plastic frame to size in order to add a little stability to the filter. I haven't used in an AE (don't have one!) but I do use it in a Model XXX.
