A new members Electrolux AP280!

Hey all, first post on this forum,and I decided to show off my first ever vacuum in my growing collection, a Canadian made, Electrolux AP280. I purchased this from a local vacuum shop in my city for about 150 bucks. Tank, original hose, power head, floor brush, dusting brush, crevice tool (non Electrolux though), bags, filter, and owners manual! I know it was made between 1980 and 82', I don't know what year it was exactly, serial number is 1019651, not sure if anyone can decode it. Here it is:

More AP280,

Ive taken a lot of photos, so I slammed them together and will discuss each one.

A) I haven't restored the power head yet, when I goto buy paint for the Silverado, I will buy some for the AP280, and repaint the power head. What version is this? In Canada its known as a Power Nozzle 100, is this anything close to a PN4?

B) Money shot, I love the chevron brush layout, I think this brush layout is the best.

C) Here is the canister. The guy at the vacuum shop said they referred to it as the 'Chocolate Sidewinder' back in the day.

D) I repainted the control area, it originally was outlined in silver, but over the years, the silver paint wore off. A little Testors silver model paint solved that problem! Green light, plugged in, Red: no bag or bag full. The motor is a 2 speed, thats what the switch to the bottom of the dirt selector is for.

E) Trigger hose, with 360 swivel at handle. I think the trigger is genius, really helps when gliding from carpet to tile or what not.

F) Ready to go! I know in the first shot I had of the set, the dusting brush is green. I want to get that painted the proper color too. I don't have the upholstery tool or original crevice tool. I want to find those eventually.

G) Testors model paint helped here too, this wasn't silver when I bought the machine, but is supposed to be. Thanks to the manual. Manual is both in English and French.

H) Original owners manual!! This came with the machine when I bought it, definitely helped when restoring the machine, and showed some interesting things.

Does anyone here have an AP280 or AP200 or 100?

PS what do you guys use to clean the machine? Windex helped a lot on all surfaces of the set, but on the machine there is this white powdery stuff on the corners of the tank and what not, Windex, nor warm water with dish soap could get rid of it. Any suggestions?

Serial numbers: the first number tells you the year of production, so, as long as you know the span in which the model was produced, you can get the exact year. 1, in this case, equals 1981.

The power nozzle is PN 280; its almost identical to a U.S. PN II.

Cleaning: I wipe the entire surface down with dish detergent, and then give it a going over with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, and then wipe it with detergent again, and then apply a final shine with Armor-All. *Its very important to wipe the machine down again after using the magic eraser; otherwise, the finish will be very dull.

The AP series is an excellent set of vacuums...lightweight, powerful, relatively quiet, and easy to use. [this post was last edited: 11/15/2010-10:02]

Nice machines, iirc the AP280 was one of my first Electrolux finds. You can still buy the exhaust filters at Canadian Tire. I'm sort of kicking myself the last few days because there was a really nice ap200 at the Restore last month for $50 and I let it go. Tools were missing.. Then last week I'm back in the restore and lo and behold the tools had been found although the vac had long since sold. But I got that Kenmore twin fan to make up for it

Just as an fyi - the Ap280 and SAP were made from 1978 to 1982.
