A Milestone Hoover Find....

Here it is fresh from the flea market. I am also $12 lighter in the pocket too. However it is worth it. This is the May 1988 version of the Hoover 80th anniversary Elite. It is serial number 2110, model number 4473-080. So this was the 2110th one off of the line. Does anyone know how many were produced? I have been looking for one for a long, long time and was happy to find this one this morning. It needs a belt and the type A bag was full and resembled a brick! This one is cool since it is a full anniversary model like the 1983 model. The other anniversary model that was specifically for an anniversary was the gold model 65 of 1957. Maybe someone could tell me how these 80th models got out to the public? Were they given away by dealers such as the 65s or something else?

Hoover UK have a Centenary model in the pipeline according to our rep- Ive told him I want one .

On the subject of 80th Anniversary machines a certain German company beginning with M made their 1st vacuum 80 years ago - can you guess what I have on order for next month?

Here's a picture of me using the one that Fred Nelson got NIB.

I was told by my boss at Hoover that they were given to all of the employees as a gift. He got one, and gave it to his son--it's long gone by now.

And they were some of the first Elites off of the assembly line--as the Elite had just been introduced--and these models had the needle bearing on the belt pulley end of the motor (just like the Concept One). They changed that to a ball bearing pretty early on... doing so significantly quieted the Elite down. That 80th anniversary model should ROAR!

Of course, when I think of it I remember seeing this Miele stick vac from (it must have been, judging by the tool caddy thing) the 1970s and it looked like something from the 30s ;p ah wait that was siemens..but even so it proves one thing, germans aren't that keen on modern designs

Thanks for the information. I cannot imagine a brand new one! I was happy to find the used one as they to me seem pretty rare. You are very right. This one definitely has the needle bearings and it ROARS so loud, I am not even going to use it. I am sure that a replacement will be found soon. I prefer the ball bearing motors. You have a point about the s/n. If they started at 1001 then you are right. I am not sure where they started as I do not have production information on this newer stuff. What s/n was Fred's example? Was it low or high? Mine was made in May of '88. I am not sure when they began production. I will have to try to find out.

Heya Tom.

Another way to tell early Elites is the square hole in the base of the cleaner. Not sure why they got rid of it, but they did so very early on. Same with the red bristles on the agitator. Those went away pretty quickly from what I understand.

Our two machines were probably made on the same day! They lead very different lives. Thanks for the photos. I never noticed the hole in the bottom. It looks to me like they made room for the screws that held on the fan chamber. I wish mine looked that nice underneath. Cool glam shots!

'83 anniversary model

Forgive my ignorance, but what was the 75th anniversary model? Top of the line concept one maybe? The iron horse convertible? Anybody have more info or even a picture? the curiousity is killing this cat.
Also does anyone know if Hoover is planing a 100th anniversary model? The new connie seems like a perfect choice.

1983 75th anniversary cleaner

was a plastic Convertible with a dirt cup...pictures please Tom!

Here is the 1983 Hoover 75th anniversary cleaner. It is a plastic base Convertible with everyone's favorite dust cup. It was originally painted to look like it was polished aluminum. I had to repaint it as the original finish had mostly come off. So mine is not as shiny as it was when new.
