I have a Miele Platinum canister vac in the vac shop for a repair. The problem is when the cord is fully extended and plugged in the vac will cut out and then go back on when the cord is moved around. I have the cord winder exposed and there is continuity on both the black and white wires going into the cord winder. What do I do next? Do I order a new cordwinder or can I repair this one??

Thanks,,, Brad.

Are you going to start cutting a share of the profit to the people who are helping you? Part of owning and operating a vacuum-shop is having the ability to diagnose and solve problems on your customers' machines!

before id order a cord winder,,try a reg cord wired into the vac,see if it turns on...if it does then you know for sure its the winder..think of that step as a double check...if it doesnt come on then go in order from switch to control board ect...had sim prob with a riccar 1400 can. traced to the control board. and a ground..but at first seemed like the reel...hope it helps and good luck

to tristar...

First of all I do NOT own and operate my own vac store...... I do have the ability to diagnose and solve problems for the customers machines AND I am already DOING this.AND>>>>>>>>>I am still in the big learning curve( and this is where I ask questions??????????????) on the electrical part of diagnosing and repairing vacs. I have two questions for you.

1. Do you own and operate your own vacuum store?

2. I am curious to know what you may have done when you have been in a learning curve for diagnosing vacuums for your customers?

Brad,

You may also want to check the cord, there could be a break somewhere in the length of the cord that would be causing the problem also.

cord replace

hi I know a lot about miele and as said above you should check the cord first because normaly a cordwinder could break down but not on a recent cleaner.

good luck edgar

Sometimes on Miele canisters, the movable half of the cordreel separates from the stationary half, just a little bit, to cause intermittent continuity between the contacts. Try pushing the "reel" toward the "body" of the cordreel -- if it moves, that was your problem.

According to Miele, the cordreel needs to be replaced. I've had success with just putting a washer or shim on the center hub of the cordreel, to keep the "reel" and "body" from separating. And a Kirby rubber fan washer works fantastic for that. Give it a try. If you're feeling nasty, you can charge $10 for that part and call it a "cordreel repair kit".

:D
