A Little Something I've Wanted For A While Now...

I know I said I am giving up vacuums, but I have wanted one of these for the longest time, and had to get it...The Hoover Duros Canister Cleaner. It is not the best vacuum in the world though..
Pros: canister easily glides across any floors. The hose is not that cheap plastic kind that most newer cleaners have. Variable speed control. Ergonomically designed handle. Headlight is able to be on when cleaning hard surfaces with the power nozzle. Light weight. Metal wands. On-off brushroll. Bag check indicator.

Cons: short hose. Short Cord. TERRIBLE power nozzle, not enough power to it. dust leaks into the bag compartment instead of the bag sometimes. The attachments constantly fall off. No floor tool included.

All in out, this is a good vacuum for the money. Kenmore canisters are very expensive, but they are also very good. So if you consider $150 for this, it is definitely not too bad. The suction is very good on it. If you are looking for a vacuum for a house with lots of hard surfaces and/or rugs, it is the PERFECT vacuum. A longer hose it would help very much. But like I said, for the price, it is pretty good. The attachments fall off very easily, so I just took the "caddy" off. I think they should AT LEAST be stored on the machine itself. I also like how the wand, hose, and power nozzle is all direct connect. So there are no cords hanging all over.

Just to clarify the background to the Hoover Duros. This vacuum was originally a Sanyo Power Team model made and sold by Sanyo of Japan and branded with the Sanyo name. It was subsequently sold as the Hoover Duros after Hoover signed a contract with Sanyo.

The first Duros' on the market were rated "Unacceptable" by Consumer Reports because several models anonymously bought by the Consumers Union buying team were found to have faulty bag holders that allowed dirt to leak out. These were subsequently corrected, and newer tests done by CR have consistently rated the vac as very good for everything except carpet cleaning. Unusual for most canisters tested by CR, the Duros has very good hose airflow for use with tools.

Doesn't the power nozzle look a little like Eureka's Express nozzle? I remember when I first saw the Sanyo version in the early 1990's that it seemed clear to me that Sanyo tried to copy Eureka with this. It was Sanyo's first motor-driven power nozzle for carpets.

I thought that to about the PN! I got mine in 2004 and Ive used it quite hevaly, It just wont die lol. But I do agree its not a good carpet cleaner and the dust does leak out of the bag a bit on mine but not to bad. But for the type of carpet I had down here it worked good for what it is. I liked also the fact that it has the variable speed control. The slider on mine sticks and dosn't ajust very well anymore and the hose and cord could Definatly be longer. Mine also sat in 3-4 inches of water for 2 days and I thought at least the PN would be a gonner as it was completly submerged but nope it still fired up after drying out.

If memory serves, I saw a power nozzle like that in the vacuum cleaner section of an electronics store when I lived in Beijing. I believe it was a Sanyo machine. It certainly stood out because power nozzles are extremely rare on vacuums in China...in fact, that's the only one I ever saw there. Most homes (in fact, 100% of the homes I've lived in or visited) have tile, wood, or laminate floors. I remember thinking, though, that the small size of the power nozzle would certainly be suitable for smaller Chinese homes (that happened to be carpeted).
