Here is my latest aquisition...a Hoover, no I mean JCPenney Floor a Matic...it is a mess right now. I am not sure of the age on this one. I thought you Penneys collectors might like to see it.

Hey Tom...

Hopefully you got my email... As I wrote you, Jeff Schroff suggested I contact you. I had a few questions about the Hoover Constellations and he wrote me that you're one of the "go to" experts when it comes to Hoovers.

Hey Tom-

There you go, having to ruin a perfectly good surprise! Well, sort-of. :-)

Just today I boxed up and sent you one of those EXACT machines as a surprise gift. I thought it would be a nice addition to your Penney's machines! ((Expect it maybe on Monday--via UPS))

Well, maybe not exact.. the color on yours looks to be sort-of brown, and the color on the one I'm sending you is more of a dark charcoal. Included with it is the JCPenney owners manual--with the purchase date written on the inside cover. I think it was January of 1979. So, that would probably put yours a year or so after it. I also see that yours looks to have the heat-stamped decal on the front, and the one I'm sending you has a metal plate, a-la the original FAM's.

Well, now you'll have two! Unless you clean up and send that one along home with Brother Chris--I never asked him if he's played with a Floor A Matic... I seem to remember lots of terrazzo floors where he lives, he could really put one of those bad boys to work!

Let me know when it arrives!

I had one of the those back in the mid 70's. We lived in a
small 3 bedroom, on a slab foundation. We had tile floors in
the kitchen, bath and a 15 X 30 foot family/dinnng room. Used
that cleaner every week. It saved a lot a wet mopping with small kids running thru! Then the handle fork broke off on
one side and it got tossed out!! Got it at the JCPenney Cata-
log Outlet store here in Col. after it opened in 1976!

Hi Tom,
Saw that at the thrift store, but I had already a cart full of stuff and didnt buy it, but then you know what I think of JC Penney! It is kind of neat tho.........

Fred...

I am so sorry! I saw it by chance and picked it up for $15.99. I have never seen one before. So I was excited about it. I have a lot of cleaning to do on it yet, but that is the fun part.

Jimmy...

I was at the Restore and they had lots of vacuum stuff. This was on the floor propped up against a shelf with stuff piled in front of it. I only could see the handle. When I saw it was Penneys model, I immediately grabbed it and had the lady at the register hold it for me. I was at another local thrift and found something for you...but you probably know what it is already!

Norm..

The FAM was a great machine at buffing your floors clean. I think it was one of Hoover's best kept secrets for over 30 years. They seem to be very long lived units too. I have seen them in perfect condition all the way to beat up. I am still looking for one with a headlight.

Does anyone know where I can find a yellow Hoover Floor a Matic with a headlight?

I loved mine

though it was the real magilla (a Hoover) in rust and white. I bought it in approximately 1982 and had it for almost 20 years. Bret Schiewe bought it from me when I emptied out my house before hitting the road. That baby could do a great job on bare floors. The water lift was very good. One of Hoover's better ideas. Did you know that Stacey Krammes' husband helped work on the first '57 model? Did you ever meet Stacey (former museum director at the Hoover Museum)?

I could be completely wrong, but I think the only lighted Floor a Matic was in the brown color (kind of like a 1060) maybe not quite that dark. Fred is the only person I know of that has one in his collection, though I think they're very cool.

I have a kind of burnt orange one from 1984 I bought. It's kind of an ugly color but I bought it to use, and I do really like it, both for floors and shampooing. You could tell when I got it that the original owner probably bought it, used it once to shampoo all the carpets in her house, decided that was too large a job, and didn't use it again. It was in like new condition with all the original paperwork, from some hardware store in PA. The handwritten price tag is even still on the box!

I sure wish this machine was still in production. I've had so many people disappointed in their Floormates asking for something more substantial, but there's really nothing else on the market right now in that category.
