A day with Stan Kann

On Sunday, Tom Gasko and I went over to Stan's and had a fun day playing with his old vacuums and lunch at Applebees. Tom brought the new Dyson DC17 for Stan to see, and we put it to work on Stan's second floor and got up quite a bit of dirt that he wasn't aware was even there. Stan rotates his vacuum, and this week he had been using the Hoover 425 Silver Jubilee for his rotating brush vacuum, and his Royal Standard for his straight suction vacuum. Here are some pictures of our visit. The first is a picture of Stan with his 425.

Stan's Hoover model 425 was one of my favorites from his collection. I really liked the bag design. I think he told me that he disconnects the bag to save the elastic retainer as they tend to get fragile over the years. It would be a real treat to run that classic Hoover cleaner and better yet to have some guidance from Stan!

It was actually a lot of fun to run the machine and to hear Stan tell about it. On this machine, he put a zip tie between the elastic retainer and the hook on the bag so it doens't have to stretch as far to keep it from wearing out. Stan is such a neat guy, for being 88 years old, he sure does still have a lot of energy, and still thinks very young! I sure hope that I have that much energy when I reach his age.

Looks like another fun gathering! The Model 425 is a nice machine; does Stan's have the original flat belt setup?

And that Royal Standard is BEAUTIFUL! I love those machines with the bag mounted on the right...better suited to lefties like me.

I agree...Stan has so much information on his machines and he tells the story of each machine so well. It was a real treat to meet him in person last summer. I remember seeing this 425 and him telling me about the bag. He is very conscious about preserving their condition. This is why the zip tie does not surprise me at all. He is a real treasure. I will always enjoy looking at the photos I took of his collection that day. Thanks again for the pics...they are great...

Visiting with Stan =is= always "more fun than a barrel of monkey isn't it!

Since he loves old Hoovers and Kirbys, I guess he was right at home dumping out the Dyson dirt on a newspaper wasn't he!! I talked to him today and he said that it was too cold out there to go out to the alley to dump the dirt into the trash can.

So that begs the obvious question, what DO Dyson owners do during inclement weather? Will they have to spread out newspapers and dump the dirt out, as with Kirbys from days of yore??!

(Not trying to pick a fight here with Dyson fans; I really am wondering about this.)

I think the obvious thing to do with the dirt from the Dyson dust cup would be to put it in the kitchen trash can and empty it. Thats what I do when I use my Dyson. The only reason we put it out on newspaper at Stans was so that we could take a picture of the dirt.

Or...

you can place a plastic shopping bag over the bottom of the dirt bin and, holding it tightly around the bin, press the release lever and let the dirt fall into the bag. Then, after the dust settles in the bag, carefully remove the bin and tie up the bag. You get exposed to less of a dust cloud that way.

Actually..

If you hold the dust bin far enough down into the trash can, you don't get any flying dust. The whole point of putting the picture of the dirt on the newspaper, was simply to show the AMOUNT of dirt the Dyson removed from approximately 20 square feet of carpet. Bear in mind, that the carpet on which we used the Dyson had been cleaned with a Hoover WITH a beater bar, and that Hoover was in perfect operating condition.
