50's Electro Hygiene

I wonder if anyone remembers an Electro Hygiene Tank made in the late 50's. It was blue hammertone and had a place to put crystals of some sort on top of the hose coupling. This sort of looks like a Royal but the blower port on the back was flat and not rounded. It had two black solid runners and a shake out cloth bag with a red metal funnel that sat in the bag after inserted into the machine. Would love to see a picture of it. I remember my Mom buying this when I was real young. She traded in a Premier Upright that had a broken handle. This vacuum lasted for years and was passed on to my aunt after we moved to a house mom and dad had built. Mom bought a Westinghouse canister since she had a new house. That was the hardest bag change ever. I could not even do it most of the time. It was also the worst vacuum we had over the years.....I replaced that one with a new Hoover Model 70.

I think what you are thinking of is the model 966, which around 1948 replaced the 950. The 966 continued into the late 1970s. Between 1974 to circa 1980 it had an optional power nozzle.

IIRC, the key feature that differentiated the Electro-Hygiene from the Royal was that moth crystal accessory. The upright Electro-Hygiene had it as well in pretty much the same exact configuration.

I used to have a very early straight-suction Royal upright called the "Super Royal" -- from the mid to late 1920s I think -- which also had that moth feature, and, again, looked rather the same as the Electro-Hygiene version. So I don't know when this change in design and name designation occurred.

That is such a classy looking machine, in a space age Jetson's sort of way.  I used to see lots of Electro-Hygienes around but none in the last 10 years or so.

I have the same one, motor dated 1968, except mine has no cordwinder.

Hans, that's a beauty! It's a different color from mine - if the photo's color is correct. It appears to be a "misty green" color. Mine is in-your-face electric blue!!

Those are beautiful machines... I've always loved how Royal color coordinated their hoses, cords, wand cuffs, tools, etc... with the paint on the machine.  It makes the cleaner look so elegant and upscale.
