It is one of the....long-lost-dyson-relatives.

That is exactly right. James Dyson talks at length about the DryTech in his book "Against The Odds", and how Sears believed that it would not sell, and tried to force him to change it. They brought in all kinds of engineers to make it different. he stood by his design, and apparantly they figured out he had it right from the get go.

It was designed to be used with the Capture. In fact Sears sold buckets of the stuff along with the machine. Before this they had a bagged machine made by singer that was a worthless pice of crap.

Dyson's Cyclones made the dry cleaning process possible.

I really personally think that the machine is not okay for regular vacuuming. The brush is way to thick and agressive, and the filtration in the machine is dismal at best. It can filter out that powdery stuff ok, but fine dust and dirt particles do not really work well. In fact againfrom the book he tells that this product used his most basic, and original technology.

Hence there was only one cyclone in the machine.

I own two of these machines-one under the "Drytech" name and the other under the Sears label. One came from a yard sale-the other fromn "Joe" the roving used vacuum man. Please note---the machine IS NOT a vacuum cleaner-it was designed only to apply, work in,and pick up the "Capture" carpet dry cleaning material. It works poorly as a vacuum cleaner.Poor filtration.also whats interesting about this unit--it is a fan first design.According to the diagram for the machine-the material picked up goes thru the fan and is blown into the cyclone filter-via one of the "pillars" that holds the material catch cup and the handle.due to the Souths high humidity these machines seem popular around here.I have used it with "host" and it works well. You have to work it in with the machine-let the powder dry for 45Min-then put the machine in the "Vacuum" mode and pick it up.Unlike the "Host" machine-it just applies the Host cleaner-but does not pick it up.You need to use a separate vacuum.also on the selector switch-sometimes the powder gums it up and the Capture machine will not vacuum the spent Capture powder. The machine has to be taken apart to clean the mechanism. You have to let the Capture or Host cleaner DRY COMPLETELY before picking it up with this machine or a separate vacuum to prevent clogging.also--NEVER-NEVER use the machine for wet carpet cleaner pickup. The Capture machine is designed for dry carpet cleaners only.

me and old appliancenut are making a trade..he gets the drytech and i get my dream machine...a FANTOM THUNDER!!!!

Original Dyson technology

In the various photos and the book itself, doesn't James Dyson comment on himself ripping the bag from a Hoover 'Junior', and replacing it with a contraption of cardboard and sticky tape, with which he then uses to vacuum the entire house, twice?

This would be where the 'fan first' design comes from.
