The crazy thing is those resistance wires create heat when you are using the low speed. You can feel it come out of the housing, which is why there are tons of little holes. The singer version had a two speed switch in the handle.

Thanks for the photo Tom 😊 so no speed variator like today but an electric resistance like for my old electric fans ! energy consumption remains the same at low and high power and the resistor gives off a lot of heat
