For some reason, whenever I see vacuums in the trash lately, they are always Self Propelled Hoover Windtunnels. I wonder why that is? I've seen three in the last year or so.

But - are those vacuums

trashed when there's really nothing wrong with the vacuum, or is it genuinely broken...sometimes I wonder. At least, I know a lot of users here find trashed wal mart vac's and it's something so minor that it shouldn't have been thrown away....

I think the Walmart vacuums are so cheap that when the filters clog or belt breaks they buy a new one. I rarely see them in the trash oddly. I did see an orange Hoover Spirit can a while back. There is a man here that rides around and picks up stuff and he grabbed it.

As a kid I saw an avocado Sears Best canister in trash but my mother was driving and wouldn't stop. I can't blame her - a friend of hers lived next door!

In my area, people have been junking Dysons, Bissells, Sharks, and other assorted plasti-vacs. They are all I've been seeing at thrift shops here lately with the occasional vintage one at certain shops. We may be approaching the time where most of the basements, attics, and garages have been cleaned out. Hopefully not though

TriStar A101 (EXL-CS) (most had been abused [ran w/o bags and/or filters or used for wet pick-up]) & a Compact C9 which was thrown because the PN made a huge racket. The vacuum itself works good; but I just need to give it a spa treatment

Sad to see so many, it's true.

And, you're all so right. Sometimes they have a broken belt, FILLED bag, etc........... Amazing how "throw away society" can just do this. Some wouldn't dare touch one, ohers rescue. It all depends on the machine, too.
If you add up all that money, it's a lot. MOST couldn't/wouldn't waste money like that. Apparently, others just throw it around...... an endless supply, I suppose,
Can you imagine discarding a metal HOOVER "Convertible" or a big heavy Kirby, Compact? Trust me: IF a stellar model (favorite vac) were on the curb, not even the most obnoxious snob would leave it there. Well, maybe.
so, I agree w/ all of ye.

Ita really really rare for a vacuum to be thrown out where I live. Probably cos of scrap metal dealers taking them, however at carboot sales I see loads of " loss of suction" Dysons, cheapo uprights and cylinder vacuums and a few Henry's often

hoover windtunnell

last night in adair okla I found a hoover windtunnell needs belt and cleaned up. and a model g electrolux in tan needs hose but works good and looks good the lux was in big cabin okla.had the wands and original floor brush with it.

Around here it's a lot of Eureka, Dirt Devil, Shark and the wierd off brands like Crofton. I've taken a Dirt Devil out of the dumpster and cleaned it up. The only things wrong with it were the filters were clogged and the brushroll was covered in hair and thread.

Then again a couple of years ago I pulled a Rainbow E2 2 speed with hose and power nozzle out of the dumpster. It had so much mud in the basin, separator, fans and even into the HEPA filter. I don't think they EVER emptied the water out of the basin. It cleaned up really well and a friend sold it out of his shop.

YES!!!

I cant believe how many vacuum's I've found in the trash or at thrift stores that simply need to be unclogged or have a broken belt. And if they are bagless the filters just needs to be washed or replaced. Like someone said above everything is so cheap now, if it doesn't suck up they toss it and go by another one.....

Where I live

Everyone gets their vacuums from the vacuum shop not a big box store, I've never seen any in the garbage or being recycled. But from what I've seen both driving & hiking through here are a shit load of central vacuums, kirby and rainbows. I know the big mansions have 2 in them I can see them in the garage when I go by & also hear them from the exhaust ports outside. I'll have to go to the 5 country clubs in here to see what they use oh the main office uses a red Oreck commercial it was being used while I was getting a permit. 😁

Well, I did pick up a Hoover Convertible once but it was plastic, an orange or brown hood. I didn't have the courage to plug it in. I did also have a Hoover Legacy that I picked up and used. The only problem was the bag compartment was broken off, and the headlight was burned out. I taped the compartment on and replaced the lightbulb. The attachments were still brand new.

I rarely see vintage vacuums any more at the curb, but I guess it makes sense as that was a while ago now when I did see them.

Same with where I live

EVERYONE goes to Vacuum shops or buys high end D2D vacuums you NEVER see vacuums in the garbage in this area .

It's all about quality here in NJ plus being a Realtor I get to look in every closet storage area laundry room ect. if they don't have central vac they have a QUALITY vac shop vacuum or a QUALITY D2D vacuum even some old HOOVER'S lurking around .

Plus with the bed bug epidemic, Fleas and other germs I would NEVER pick a vacuum out of the trash nowadays it's much different then when they used to throw out mint HOOVER CONVERTIBLES.

In NYC,

trash vacs are nasty-filthy after years of abuse, broken in multiple places, and fairly rare.
goods vacs apparently are coveted. Also because buildings are ticket hundreds of $$ over improperly
bagged garbage, most everything now is covered.

Here in San Diego trash is kept in very large cans provided by the city and wheeled to the curb.
So unless you go digging you won't see what all is being tossed.
Most people donate decent vacs. The Eureka canister and Lindhaus Healthcare Pro I just picked up
were headed for such a fate had I not called. Most craigslist ads for vacs go unanswered here I think.
Certainly for vintage stuff.
Trash vacs are someone else's filth on the one hand but provide the most satisfaction in the vacuum treasure hunt game.

I forgot about the beds bug, fleas, & even maggots but I haven't forgot about the germs..heck I have the large scar across my stomach from MRSA that I got while cleaning a Rainbow Gold 2speed off Ebay. It was clean but I took it apart anyway but you can never tell what your gonna bring back to your home, even though it appears clean & if its been sterilised & looked at with a black light if I see spots still..out it goes to the refuse man!
