Joanne and I found this lovely polisher in a tiny little second hand and antiques store in Obsevatary Cape Town

Its going to need some cleaning up and well actually a full rebuild to bring it to its original condition. I see some models had golden bases and others silver This one has been repainted before but I cant tell what its original color is

Nice find!! I'm wondering if the machine is the same style that Electrolux Sweden would have had--or if they even manufactured it? If I understand it correctly, Sweden made Electrolux USA's polishers (B-3 and B-6 if not others) until the USA began manufacturing its own starting with the B-7s in 1957. We did have our own B-9 that was manufactured in the early 1980s, but it is quite different than yours.

Did/Does Africa have its own Electrolux/Lux/Aerus manufacturing plant(s)?

If your B-9 has a label please post an up close pic of it.

A Long Way From Home....

The covered glass candy dish behind the polisher (to the right of the vintage phone) is a piece of Anchor Hocking "Fortune," made in the U.S. only for just two years, 1937 and 1938. I grew up around one of these candy dishes, in my paternal grandmother's house, and now have one of my own. It's not particularly valuable, perhaps worth $30, but the memories are great.

It would be interesting to know how this one made the long journey to S.A. Objects do have a life of their own!

South Africa did have its own manufacturing plant for Electrolux for a long time but it closed down a few years ago. This however was not made here, They were imported from Europe or the UK. I have seen a few examples for sale on Ebay UK and on Ebay OZ.

It is amazing how many USA citizens immigrated here in the 40's and 50's I have a 2 Kirby 508's and one 510 all with Ratting plates saying 110 v but they have been re stamped 220 v . After chatting to Tom Gasko about this He said that if you were immigrating ( well Kirby will even do it now ) You would take your machine to them and they would convert it for you. I know of atleast 10 500 series Kirbys  That means that 10 people brought them from the USA.

Gareth: Thank you for the information. Any ideas as to when your machine was manufactured? Best wishes in restoring it.

John: Thanks for posting the photo of your B-9. Do you know when it was manufactured?
