2001 Hoover Professional Dual Purpose C1417-903

Hey everyone, I got this Hoover Commercial/Elite/Legacy what ever you wanna call it! Lol.


It came off another collector called Stu, it had been cleaned up already but I did tear it down and clean it because I can't help myself! it runs really good and is in excellent condition, I presume it is from the 90's but I have no idea exactly how old it is, cause it doesn't have "our" Hoover dating system on it.


It is all back together now and roaring to go anyway, here it is...


 


As you can see it did come with the tools on-board, needless to say the suction is not mind blowing, through the hose, not as good as our Total Systems, believe it or not!

I think this was the later version of the C1409

As it doesn't have the air freshener, but not sure.

It has the switch on the handle which is very convenient.

I love these "Elite" type rod slider switches, I love very loud clunk when you switch it on and off.

H4 bag fitted

The Type A bags that were designed for these machine were a bit longer, but these H4 bags or as you call in the US "Type B?" seem to fit just fine. This machine did come with a reusable permabag.

Cleaning tools

None but 1 of these tools are the right style for this machine and that is the dusting brush, the wand is off a Purepower, the Upholstery tool off a Turbopower Total System and the crevice tool is off a VAX 121, I can see why they are missing they don't fit on the caddy to well.


Obviously the hose is original.

Unlike our Turbopower Total Systems

The hose on this "professional" doesn't need to be on the machine all the time when using as an upright as there is a little "cleaning tools" door to cover the hole, needless to say, the Turbomasters didn't need the hose attached to use the machine as an upright, either and the hole was still exposed but there was a little shutter that closed off the fan to the hose port.

Here is the brushroll, it does a really good job, although, they style of "Elite" cleaners doesn't feel like they are doing anything, compared to out Turbopower and Turbomasters, not sure why, what I mean is, there is no feeling of "clinging" it feels like you are using a clean air upright.

I don't think you can date it from that, but I could be wrong, as you can see, it is more powerful than the Turbolite and C1409 (the red commercial version) as it is 630 watts and not 400 watts, which the other two were, which I just mentioned.

Your cleaner was made in January of 2001. With the American machines made from 1987 until 2007 or so, the first 4 digits of the serial number are the month and year of manufacture.

Wow, what a fantastic find. These Legacy models were the absolute top of the line for many years in America. I'm surprised to hear you say the machine doesn't "cling" to the carpet. They're no Convertible/Senior, but I've always felt they seal well to carpets. Maybe your Turbopowers are really that much better. Anyway, congratulations. Enjoy your new Hoover!

Turbopowers

Back in the bag; when new (or at least when fully serviced with the relevant new parts) our Turbopower and Turbomaster cleaners were out of this world when it came to carpet cleaning. The tools were, of course, another story altogether.

I now own that dual purpose and i dont know what the previous owner did to it but its motor is shot and brush roll is in quite a similar state

Don't get me wrong, they are really good vacs with good agitation and they are nice to use, but there isn't that "stick" feeling when you push and pull it, it seems to grasp the carpet well but I can't feel the power like I can with Turbopower, you should find a Turbopower or Turbomaster, if you can...They are VERY good! The hose suction has more to be said about but it is certainly more powerful than these Elite based cleaners, however, the Turbopower 1 cleaners do have much wider air paths.[this post was last edited: 12/4/2013-13:11]

Oh dear Alex - it didn't work out then, and you paid £60 odd for that US vac as well. What did you swap with theKirbylover or did he buy it off you - knowing you, you swapped it for another Turbopwer2 lol.


How's the burgundy one getting on - you haven't done a thread on it yet?

That highlights the problem with old vacs - sometimes they do disappoint, and we have to take the rough with the smooth. Part of the fun of old vacs is repairing them, but vacs like the one above would probably be difficult to get parts for in the UK as it was essentially built for the US market.

The possibility that you can't feel the "sticking" action is simply because it is a commercial designed upright. Also they were on sale in the UK in the late 1990s with fully red plastic bodies so some parts will still be available for it.

I once saw one on store in an Edinburgh appliance store at reduced price. Quite heavy it was but I was impressed with the general design - they are generally quite durable - I've seen a few in old schools and hotels.

I take it there was no domestic (U.S.) commercial-duty equivalent to this cleaner you have that was based on our Legacy series, right?

I know we did have a commercial equivalent of the BOL Elite, though.

Nope that was it, we had 3 models under the Hoover name over here, the Turbolite "Elite 200" and two Legacy style commercial vacs.
We did have a few others under the Maytag brand which were a "Hoover Caddy Vac" style, a windtunnel , a twin chamber bagless dirty fan upright and the constelation.

Got rid? I still have it, what I REALLY would prefer is a Hoover Elite ll.
There is no reason for the weak suction that is just how it is, poor.
