When Hoover swirched from the back mount converter to the front style was there still a 2 speed motor? The old style kicked into high when the converter was inserted
Yes, indeed. The front-conversion.Convertible models.had two-speed motors. On those models, the.speed selector switch was so positioned so that, when the handle was raised.to.the locked.upright position, the motor automatically switched to the higher speed.
I have a Hoover Convertible from what I am guessing is the 1980's "Ranger" style hood. When the handle is in the upright position, it is in high speed for use with the cleaning tools. There was a little lever that was pressed by the handle bail. Basically the same switch as the old ones, but it is operated by the handle. When the handle is lowered, it is in normal speed for carpet cleaning. I don't have the correct model number anymore, as the plastic base cracked (as I have heard many did) and the base was replaced with a generic Hoover plastic base.
during the last couple metal based (IE, the Estate model U4103,model U4101,U4107,)
the last were around 1976 to use the back converter. like the Bicentennial, and the Horseradish, Mustard, Pickles, Catchup, Denim, and one or two others. when Hoover went to the top filling type "A" bag that's when that change was made also...
What was the reasoning behind the change from metal based to plastic based? Price? I have several plastic based convertibles that I love, but they don't seem to have that heft that the metal convertibles had.
HOOVER WAS BATTLING THE CONVERTIBLES WEIGHT COMPETING WITH EUREKA TO LIGHTEN THEIR UPRIGHT LINE...ESPECIALLY THE FULL COVERED HOOD MODELS....ALSO IT WAS MORE COST EFFECTIVE TO BUILD WHERE ONE BASE COULD SERVE FOR BOTH FULL AND SMALLER CAPPED MOTOR HOOD APPLICATIONS......TRANSITIONING MODELS ENDING IN -001 TO THE INITIAL FRONT TOOLED MODELS INTRODUCED IN 1977.....1978 SAW THE PHENOLIC PLASTIC BASES COME INTO VOGUE WITH THE UPDATED 1977 MODELS U4101/03/07/09/13/15 AND THE NEW ROUND HANDLE LINE FEATURING THE ICONIC U4119/27/21/29 DENIM CONVERTIBLES THE REST IS HOOVER HISTORY AND WAS THE VERY FIRST HOOVER LINE I SOLD FROM AS A FACTORY AUTHORIZED HOOVER SALES AND SERVICE DEALER IN 1978
the Hoover Historical Center, 1931 was the first year for the two-speed motor, the model 750 which later would see the headlight appear, as per Henry Dreyfuss.
