2 Broken Kirby G3's

I am quite familiar with the Heritage II and older models. Not very familiar with the g series.

G3 #1:
The handle does not stay up on its own as whatever spring is supposed to hold it up broke. Also the handle does not return to neutral, so whatever direction you last had it in, that's where it stays.

G3 #2:
This one works goes, but the handle does not return to neutral, so whatever direction you last had it in, that's where it stays... Ideas?

Sounds like you have at least one issue in common.

G3#1:
1. Replace handle pivot spring assembly. If the Tech Drive engagement is still stuck after appropriate handle pivot spring assembly installation, continue on to the next repair.
2. Check/replace guide blocks for slide bracket (under the handle pivot spring assembly).
3. Check/replace slide roller bearings.

G3#2:
Check that the current handle pivot spring assembly is not too tightly mounted, and check the integrity of the slide bracket and guide blocks. If all this checks out, do the same repairs as numbers 2 and 3 above.

Ok I am not understanding at this point what returns the handle to neutral. I even tore apart my working G4 to look and don't see anything. If I pull back, the machines keep going back. If I push forward it keeps moving forward. I am baffled. On the G4 if I let go, it returns to neutral. I tore both down, the pivot pin that typically wears out is in great shape, and I cleaned and lubed the guide blocks and roller bearings. Same problem......

You may be missing the...

Centering spring. Typically included with G4's and newer models, I have heard that some G3's did not have them. Here's a link to the slide with a centering spring assembly.

You may be able just get the spring by itself; however, note that it is mounted in the underside of the slide.

That makes sense, neither of my g3s have a centering spring. My g4 doesn't either. I went ahead and cleaned the blocks, pivot assy, and lubed the rollers. Reassembled and it is very acceptable. It is not as nice as the ultimate g diamond, but is usable.

As for the g3 that needed the handle pivot asst replaced, i am not going to fix this. It needs other work that makes it Not worth it.

I remember

When I first got my G3, the shift between forward and reverse was extremely ungraceful. Very jerky. I took it apart and replaced the block with one with a spring. IIRC, the old block did not have accommodations for a spring at all. Now it shifts very smoothly. Concerning the handle that won't stay up, mine did that too. I took a handle spring assembly out of a junk G4 and cut the rubber shield thing on the G3 to fit it.
