Why would a Hoover break down???!!! Come on, Steve, don't be silly, we know that will never happen, especially the Turbopower 1000, oh wait? Jamie might be able to help us here I think! :P

That said I have never come across a Hoover Junior, Senior, Turbopower 1/2/3 or 1000 that had burnt out, maybe Purepower's and Vortex's but not the GOOD Hoovers.
 
It doesn't need to be the Motor does it Alex?
What about brushroll failure or bristle wear, the casing fracturing, wheels breaking etc and we know we cant any of these now either - there is another post here where some guy is trying to get rear wheels for a TP1 - he's about to learn about the joys of collecting old vacs where parts are long obsolete.
The whole point with collecting vac is to preserve them in as good a state as possible for as long as possible, and inevitably that means not to use them as daily drivers. Surely you like to just look at them as ornaments, and appreciate their growing rarity?
 
Oh, I do use my cleaners regularly, but not really ruffly and I use a different one everyday so any one cleaner is only being used about 3 times every few weeks.

Alex - Please don't twin the classic Hoover uprights with the TP1/2/3 - they're just not the same. On account that you see more Senior and Junior models than the Turbopower uprights speaks volumes - metal was the way to go to extend durability and yes, they were around a lot longer than the hardbox uprights, to be fair to Hoover, but that's no reason to why spares like a brush roll and other parts should be taken out of production.

Yet you can find MOST spares for those classic metal uprights compared to the plastic hard box models. I know - I had to get rid of the Hoover Junior Deluxe I had earlier this year and was glad when someone offered me a price for it. No collector would have taken it on the basis that it was missing the all important and very rare orange bottom cord hook that was missing on mine- I know as a collector I wouldn't have bought it.
 
My number 1. favourite Hoover upright would be the Juniors, LOVE those, number 2. being the Turbopower 1's and 3. the Turbopower 2's I do love the Turbopower 2's but I have to stress, the Junior is my favourite simply because of it's looks and the fact that they are SO durable, easy to fix and parts are radially available because of their durability
 
WELL, unless of course you require a soft bag replacement - then you're cooked. You either have to buy in a donor machine with a similar bag or put up with second hand ones that may have the emblem rubbed off or a bit missing at the bottom, or the generic replacement "grey" outer bags.

Not exactly widespread availability there. But that has to be expected with soft bagged uprights. It's a small compromise to some but to others, a bit of a let down to those who want to maintain the original exterior look of their original vacuum.
 
I came across this Junior several months back on ebay - As soon as I saw it I knew I had to have it. It had been in a cupboard most of its life in an old ladies house. It was all original including the plug, and had virtually unused tools. Its now in my Hoover room, so I can go and look at it, but I don't use it. I can run it once or twice a year to keep the motor freed up. I store it without the belt on and in a totally blacked out room with no lights on. Sunlight ruins vacs so it has to be dark.


As collectors we need to be sympathetic to old vacs - by all means use them very sparingly, but how do you feel when you see an all original, never used TP2 like on the vid in the link? to preserve it, the owner Roger never uses it, and look how lovely it looks - in years to come it will appreciate in value, and rarity. Imagine how kids will look at that in 30 years time when its immaculate at 50 years old. Even an immaculate Dyson DC01 will appreciate in 30 years time, but they have to be preserved and NOT used as daily drivers. Buy a cheap new Purepower or a Kirby or something for daily use. I bought 2 new Purepowers, one for the collection that will  never get used, and another to use as a daily hack along with my Kirby G4, as Kirbys can be maintained still and parts will be available for years to come for them.

This junior was only made for part of 1967, and is the very first 1346 model - they are VERY rare with the orange front panel. It was the first year also that the familiar hoover model label and year coded serial numbers came out:

Thanks for the compliments on the 1346 - its one of my most favourite vacs, a real diamond in the rough it was too on Ebay - I only paid £20 for it as the owners were selling off their grandmothers estate and didn't realise the rarity of what they were selling. Its nice when you find little rarities like this local to you - they don't come up very often, and that's all part of the thrill of collecting vacs - the regular trawling of ebay looking for that little "gem".


 


Anyway, enough about Juniors - where's that video on the Airstream - We are still waiting to see it in action Alex!

Well, my advice to you would be not to use it as a daily driver and when you do use it, keep it set on medium power to avoid stressing the motor, as you remember what Benny said about them burning out.


If I was you I would use something modern like the Henry with the Airobrush as a daily driver and keep your older vacs for "special occasions" use. It would be a shame of that Airstream burnt out the motor, like JMurray01 did by constantly using his TP1000 till the motor died, then realised getting a new motor would be a tad difficult.


Good stuff the old "back to black" silicone spray isn't it - better for shining plastic vacs up than car bumpers?
