1974 KIRBY CLASSIC OMEGA

Hello, I recently purchased a classic omega off of craigs list that is in good shape I would like to convert this to a paper filter bag any idea what or how I should do this and does any body have spare parts to do this? anybody have a rosewood handle for this model also i have a green handle that i believe does not look original due to everything else is rosewood. one last question were is the best place to find parts for this unit at thanks for all the help.

Nope, green handle isnt original... Its supposed to be brown.

To convert it:

Get a mini-emptor from a Kirby Tradition, Heretage, HII, or Legebd II.

I think the Heretage bag (Orange) would look best on it, BTW.

Take off the Omega bag and emptor and put on the Heretage Emptor and bag.


You might want to talk to another member named twocvbloke about converting Kirbys.

Pretty much beaten me to it, if you're handy with a sewing machine (or know someone who is) you could buy a spare bag and have that altered with a long zip, so it looks correct for the vac rather than using a later Heritage/HII bag...

This is an example of a conversion bag, and if you ask him nicely, he might just sell the assembly without the ClassicIII parts for less money, just the bag, filltube & emtor (just don't forget to buy some bags too, I recommend the white Polypropylene bags, they filter extremely well compared to paper, oh, and he has replacement handles to fit your Omega too):

you can buy parts off ebay. Kirby Needs ebay store (kirbyneeds.com) has lots of stuff.


For converting to paper bag you have a few options:

Bag- as mentioned you could get someone to install a zipper on it, or just buy a different bag that has one already. Kirby had generic bags in black i think.

Fill tube assembly you have a couple options. First (and easiest/best performance) would be to use a mini-emtor from a Heritage II/Legend. This however will change the appearance of the machine. Option #2 is to get a sani-emtor off a Heritage which looks like the Classic emtor but is black in color. Option 3 is get Heritage Fill Tube Bottom Adaptor part #190181 (see link) and put it on your original aluminum emptor (you might need to drill 2 holes for the screws and put a little silicone but I've seen it done) then install the Heritage II (or newer) fill tube and bag adapter. This is what I will be doing to my Kirby Tradition to preserve original appearance.

one last question what is the difrence between rosewood and brown for the colors?

sorry, but i have one last question. i was going to replace the handle spring, but it says that you are supposed to have a special tool. has anybody ever changed out the spring without the special tool thanks.
