By the way guys, not moving house now so dont have to sell my collection which i am pleased about! Anyway, my question, starting with the first uk junior that used belt removing hose converter.... was it the 1334 in 1958? in rose and ivory? how did the sequence run including colourschemes? I remember my aunt having one as far back as i can remember, i was born in 67 and it seemed to be well older than me. In the early years of my life, Im sure i remember it having a tan coloured bag. it had a beige handle cover and i think a beige front cover. then in the mid 70s , she sent it down to our local repair shop when the motor burnt out. It came back with a dark blue softer cloth bag and dark blue front cover, I think it took paper bags now as opposed to not before i think i am right. It ended up years later in our shed being stripped for parts when my Dad was repairing my cousins junior dirtshearcher. Hope someone can throw some light on which model and year this junior was from. Its cord was also beige origionally and its base metal, im guessing it was from near the beginning of this series, I think it had a metal crevice tool. Junior timeline.

Hi Si,

The first junior to use the belt lifter converter for the tool attachment was indeed the 1334 of 1958 vintage. This machine was produced in Rose and Off White. It took the H1 paper bags, and was the first junior to do so. The outer bag had the clip at the top, as per most hoover cleaners from the 725 onwards, and this simply held the outerbag up and closed over the paper bag.
This lasted until 1962 IIRC, when the 1334A was relesed in the borign battleship grey colours. This had the same fabric for the outer bag, but now has the spring loaded hook to keep it up, and the zip fastener.
This was replaced in 1965 aprox with the Hop green and Jonquil colours, and the bag fabric was a sturdier wool blend material. Very soon into production of this colour, hoover replaced the metal hoods with plastic. 1967 saw the indrodcution of the 1334E, in a grey/green and white colour combination. This machine was the standard juior along side the new 1346 Delux model in light/deep greige and pumpkin. 1968 saw the 1346 lose the pumpkin front cover, replaced with deep greige matching the handle and bumper.
1970 saw the 1346A in aqua and white, now with 4 position height adjustment wheel. These colours lasted until 1972 I beleive when deep blue and white became the choice.
1968/9 saw a 3rd junior model, the 1354. This was the same as the 1346 but in blue and white and was the first junior to include a headlight.
1970 saw the 1354A, essentially the same as the 1354, but now has a plasticised bag material, and the 4 position height adjustment.
1354 saw the end of the 1334E, as 1354 became the delux, and 1346 was now standard.
1975 was the year the models changed from 1354A and 1346A to the new national models, U1012 in gold and beige, and U1016 in brown and beige. These lasted until 1978 when the new junior range U1036 and U1040 were released.

I hope that this helps you out Si, and hope it is accurate, as I dont have exact production dates for the 1964 onwards models.

I think my aunts junior must have been the 1334a from c1962 I didnt know the metal tip clip bags housed a paper bag I thought only the zip method contain the paper bag that explains my aunts. It must have had a paper bag in origionally. When the guy serviced it in the 70s he put her a blue zipper on. The old bag was probably wrecked they never looked after stuff the kids used to ride on it and all sorts! BUT IT RAN AND RAN AND RAN! Fantastic machines I use a 1334 now as my vac at home. Its brill it hugs the carpet like brand new. The 50yr old hose still smells brand new when you stretch it and provides excellent suction. The 1334 series machine must be one of the best ever,you can still get most of the parts quite easily.

Clark: Hoover Junior outer bags

I have my Gran's 1334 purchased in Dec 1961. This is the Rose pink/Rose White colour version. I remember during the Seventies, that it had a grey outer bag (I never saw the original pink bag on it).

I seem to remember that this grey outer bag was a soft silky/satin type material, that was easily pooked by rough surfaces (even rough skin on your finger-tips!), and seemed to be quite thin as it eventually split and wore out.

The next bag was the mottled, black & grey checks, rubberised cloth type.

couple of junior questions

hi junior buffs!
As weve just learnt from Clark the junior changed from metal to plastic base in 65, does anyone know if the slight change of shape came with it? i e the loss of the rebated hood top and loss of 2 vent slots and full width flat front cover replaced origional shape. Also the converter slightly changed at some point... lost its finger spike and took a 2prong bayonet plastic nonswivel hose connecter without the switch release. did this all come together in the 65 change? Would each converter fit both machine types? Im assuming you would have to use each hose with its own converter type?

Junior History.

Howdies guys and gals.

SI,

The junior range retained the hood shape and the vent slots throughout the 1334 range. When the hood was changed from cast alloy to plastic, the hood vents changed from 2 sets of 3 slats, to 2 sets of 2.

The full width flat front cover was introduced with the 1346 in 1967. The hood also changed shape at this point to the smoother shape losing the feature lines along the length of the top of the hood.

It was in 1978 when Hoover launched the U1036 that the junior lost the familiar vent slots on the top near the handle bail.

The on/off switch and handle release button were then incorperated in the large multifunction button on the rear left corner.

This is how the design remained until the late 1980's when the junior name was applied to what used to be the TURBOPOWER junior. The juior name was also seen on a more basic version of the turbo junior which was originally marketed as the Sprite upright. This then took the name junior. The last of the Hoover cleaners prior to the stick cleaner they now produce was the U1650 which again was another example of the Turbopower juior, styled in deep red, I think this was was one of the most stylish colours this particular machine was produced in.

It sounds like the bag on your Grans 1334 pink was one from the first 1334A. This was grey and in the same fabric as the original pink machine. It lost the bag slide in preference of the zip, but was still just as fragile and yes, rough fingers and anything with a sharp edge would pull threads and even cause the demise of bags made of this fabric. The second incarnation of the 1334A in Hop green and jonquil had a bag produced from a woollen fabric which proved to be lightyears ahead in the durability stakes. It was the 1334A in 1970 which saw the first of the pasticised bag fabrics.

I hope that this clarifies a couple of points for you all.

Back in the mid 80s i aquired a 119 from a friend which i later lost in a house move, but still managed to keep the hose and converter. It did have on the plate King Georges name so I am assuming it had the red lettering. King George died during the production of this cleaner right? So it must have been an early one damn! I just bought another 119 off ebay am still waiting for it. Front cover is a blue and red replacement obviously from the next junior up. I wonder! is there a way of finding out its age?

Si, the age can be established from the serial number on the underside of the machine; for example, here's the serial number from my Junior 119. It's a red-lettered version. Can anyone date this for me?

Royal dates!!

As King George died February 1952, I wonder how many more models continued to be produced, (or how many front covers where already printed), must have been up to about K350,000!! would be interesting to see if anyone has a later serial number with King George`s Crest on the front cover...

Jack, the dates would make yours an early one, ACTUALLY, just went and checked mine, Its all red with King George Crest and Serial number: of K 438,486, which dates about Sept 1952,

We inherited a 119 once, when we moved house. It was kept in a stone-built under-stairs cupboard.

It had a broken fan, the brown cloth bag had a tear (I'm guessing the missing fan blade shot through it!), the handle shaft had a different nut & bolt added at the 'pitchfork' junction, and the soleplate had lost its chrome and gone rusty.

The fan cover had gold lettering and gold Royal Warrant. This lettering was VERY easily removed when cleaning the machine.

Gave the machine to a needy friend decades ago!

hi folks
119 has come ! will upload pics later today. Bag is striped with JUNIOR screen printed down side, half the handle is replaced, handle cover is grey on the origion upper part and front cover doesnt fit properly, it comes from the later blue model which i asssume is the same
shape?
it runs really well have had the hose on and brush rollers in good condition. the old thing just needs some tlc!
