Whats your opinion on Eurekas?

I ound a couple of old Eurekas at a local thrift shop the other day. One was $20, the other was $10. One looked to be early '80s. It was tan with brown trim and said ESP on the bag. The other one looked to be older; it was tan and red, and had a dark tan bag. It had a nice striped design on the bag and said UPRIGHT on it. Would these be worth getting? I never bothered to look at the bottom of the older one, but the tan ESP had a red plastic beater bar on the brushroll. Yes, these are both F&G Eurekas.

They are worth getting. I have to say F&G Eurekas are all-around better than a Hoover Convertible. Even $20 is a great deal for a Eureka like that. You will love them.

Eurekas are my second favorite brand. Electrolux being first, of course. I don't know what it is about Eureka, but I do like their canisters, and that PN, love it. I think it's one of the best personally. I want to get another Eureka Power Team canister, but I can't find any on eBay or in thrift stores.

Eurekas are my favorite vacuums.

I would think that if the bag said "upright" on it it wouldn't be original,but the Esp would probably be a rarer one.I love Eureka's and currently have 23 uprights and canisters and one of the upright's doesn't have the original bag, it sais upright.I would love to see the one with tan trim, brown/tan vacuums are my favorite!!!

Eurekas are my favorite uprights too! They deep clean and groom the carpet very well. I would definitely go get them!

No surprise here.....

Ever since I played with the nice-smelling attachments of our turquoise Eureka Automatic Upright as a toddler, I have been fascinated by Eureka vacs. Even the name has a certain "ring" to to it!

Not quite sure what it is about the Eurekas of the 1960's and 1970's, but the industrial designers in Bloomington, Illinois created some amazingly beautiful vacs that worked really well. The designs are sleek, understated, solid and "modern". The attachments are also sleek and understated and very "confident" looking without too many bumps and unnecessary decorations.

And nothing beats the gigantic top fill "F&G" Eureka upright dust bag.

The Eureka Williams company was so successful at making great-looking and high-performing vacuums, that the giant Swedish vac company Electrolux decided to buy it in 1974. And every so often, Eureka produced a vac or two that ended up at the top of the list in the ratings of Consumer Reports: from the top-rated upright in 1974 (Model 2042) to the top rated power nozzle canister in the mid 1980's and mid 1990's (the Express and the World Vac).

The Eureka upright design of the 1970's still survives to this day in hard-working Sanitaire commercial upright vacs - a testament to a great design.

As the slogan used to say: "Eureka. The Very Best in Vacuum Cleaners."

I have found it!

That -- as I'm sure most if not all of us are aware -- is what the word "Eureka" means, and as far as I'm concerned it's an apropos word for the fine uprights made in Bloomington, Illinois around the '60s and '70s because it meant that your search for an outstanding cleaner had come to a fruitful end!

Even the current Sanitaire models which carry on this fine design are more than worth the investment, as they are unmatched (with very little exception, might I add) in their carpet-cleaning ability.

That said, if you haven't already snagged those two machines -- and somebody else hasn't already beat you to 'em -- for Heaven's sake, get 'em! You won't regret it.

BTW ... I have 4 F&G style machines myself, and I love 'em.

They are one of my favorates.
I don't recall an esp vac originally having a wooden brushroll with red plastic beater bar though.
I'd buy them though.

There's a children's science museum in Halifax here in the UK called "Eureka!", has (or had) a big display in the large glass foyer with a cast of Archimedes being lowered into a transparent bathtub, then being pulled out rapidly and the Eureka! sign above it lighting up, then an Archimedes screw refills the bath with the displaced water and the cycle starts all over again...

As a kid I have been there a few times, all very interesting for someone like me, haven't been in many years though, cos after all it is meant for the children...

Another bit of interesting "Eureka" information...

There is a very large vacuum cleaner company in India which is called "Eureka-Forbes." I don't think there is any corporate connection to North America's Eureka, or to its Swedish parent, Electrolux. Fascinating that this Indian company is able to get away with using this name for a line of vacuum cleaners without penalty!

Love the slogan - "Your Friend for Life"!!!!!!!!
