Gentlemen (And our Non-Gentlemen readers), dust off your 8-Tracks and have some fuses handy! It's Surgery-Hour (After Surgery-Hour is Happy-Hour, all vacuum bags are %25 Off) at the Kenmore Southern-States Restoration Center! Well, now it's the Kenmore and 8-Track Restoration Center, but KSSRC is more catchy!

We got in a LLOYD'S 8-Track Player/Recorder/Radio console, and so far all it has done is sat around in it's wood-grain glory. I brought it knowing the 8-Track deck refused to play, but at $10 I figured, "Eh! this might be fun!". It sat in the patient's ward until yesterday, when I brought a can of 3-In-1 oil as Calem instructed. I dived in, only this time with screwdrivers and oil, not oxygen tanks and wetsuits, the last thing i want is to submerge this thing in water!

The metal assembly gave forth from it's wood-grain shell, and suddenly why the tapes remained still dawned on me. this was not a matter of oiling, not a matter of a belt, not a matter of explosive 8-Track damage, but a matter of a failed design. the shaft that drives the 8-Track sits in a metal holder, but not a quality metal holder, for the holder had somehow snapped off of where it was screwed into the machine! i was dumbstruck, what was I to do about this? Gluing it would be silly, it's putting a band-aid on an impact crater. I looked to my "Desk Ornament", a Sears 8-Track player and Radio. it's been

silent since the 1970s, when the same friend who gave me it tore the speaker jack out of the back! This Sears may never speak until it's day has come, but it might very well help this Llyod's (Any idea on that name? a department store perhaps?) gain it's voice. I dived in (again, no water!) again, this time into the Sears. I reach the Tape Deck, and find that they are nothing alike. determined, my inner redneck/handyman skills come into play, and i wonder if the drive-shaft from the Sears will fit the Llyod's. I removed it, and reassembled the Sears player. The screw holes did not line up, but i made them. not by drill, but by clever and perfect positioning. within no-time, I was ready for a test-drive!

Did it work? Find out below! and then read the next post after you watch the lovely VHS quality video!

The Doctor is back from.....

Figuring out how to make YouTube accept VHS, Can you believe that's a digital camera? I guess it's good for when I need a digital production with VHS quality!

Anyhow, back to TAPE-LINE, With your Host, Dr.Super-Sweeper

Tonight's Episode: The 8-Track Fiasco at KSSRC.

Dr.Super-Sweeper, after you performed surgery so advanced that states north of Florida still haven't got word of it, what did you do? Did the 8-Track player sing? or did it blow every breaker possible?

Who knew taking a Medical Class at M.H.S could be so rewarding! Dr.Super-Sweeper, I like it! anyhow, the story continues as so:

The power comes on, the light illuminates. sitting on it's own shell is the Llyod's 8-Track player and it's silenced tape deck. after finding all of my "Improvised" replacement drive belts were too tight, I simply went back to the original, only it keep slipping off! after positioning the belt so it rides perfectly on the edge of the motor's drive-shaft, The player spun into life, and the Elvis 8-Track I had brought the same day as the player (Well, the cashier threw it in with the player, stating "you can just take that old thing!" ) began to play once more. The Sears lived on inside the Lloyd's, and music filled the air of KSSRC, even before anybody clocked-in. yes, it was late, around 12PM-2AM EST, but still, it's ELVIS, man!

the player was running great! Program 2, Program 3, Program 4! Program 1.......*Insert sound of a drive-wheel slowly grinding itself into the Program Selector*.......

Biscuit! Come on, 8-Track player, Don't be Cruel!!!!!

unfortunately, the Program Selector was at it's highest point on Program 1.....which also meant it was ramming itself into the drive wheel!

This called for a complete re-innovation of the revived drive-shaft configuration, or in other words, putting that little metal thing that actually had a purpose back into doing it's purpose!! seriously though, I kept the shaft from going too low and ramming into the selector!

Thankfully, the surgery was a success. After humming "Hound Dog" in my head along the way (OK, a more skillful doctor would be more concentrated on their patient, but again, it's ELVIS! ), It was the big moment! yay!

Program 1.....nothing but more Elvis!

The player ran at full speed and full power, it was a grand sight. Elvis filled the room...until....Gasp!

Wow Alex, Great Job! With that wonderful grainy film it really felt like it was the 1950's all over again. I seen that unspooled tape you went thru great effort to show off, and I must say the acting was superb!
smiley-tongue-out.gif
Alex, you have to fix the tapes...we gotta, gotta fix'em! And whatever do, don't throw them away, they're still very much worth saving!

Calem, as usual, you're too early!

Check out the revised link in the first post, I kinda gave-away the 8-Track's full completion by forgetting I had an earlier video of under the hood!

Yes, The tapes must be fixed! I caught myself looking through a stack of them at the Flea Market today! The ironic part is, yesterday I saw another Elvis 8-Track at the same thrift store I bought the player from, they have tons of tapes! didn't get it because I had this one at home! but I did buy a Paul Anka Stereo 8-Track, and a BRAND-NEW, Sealed 8-Track from 1964, 50 Cents each! woohoo!

Anyhow, The tape player works a treat now! Here's the full demonstration below!

Dr. Super Welby, after seeing and hearing that, I felt like having a fried banana sandwich...Graceland style...Thank you Momma, thank you vey much! That looks like a Noble Peace Prize fix, if I say so myself! Whoever was smacking them tapes in really did a number on that capstan...So glad you got it fixed!

Smacking the tapes in? More like ramming the tapes in with a mallet. I'll write my name on a medical degree tomorrow, I'll hang it on the wall in my office!

Well, that's about the right length for a Doctor's title. Just about the same length as the bill they stuff you with.
smiley-tongue-out.gif

Well, "Bill" is a four letter word, and if we treat it as some kind of anti-anagram, it could possibly mean T.G.&.Y. . I think we've found a new home for Dyson! They always stocked their shelves with cheap crap, and now with the addition of Dyson, they can be truly known as the king of crap...long live the king!
smiley-tongue-out.gif

The lighting flashes, the thunder rolls while the laboratory is all an electric glow! The re-animator, Dr. Victor Super-Sweeper With the aid of his steady hand will once again revive the King of rockin' roll. I have every confidence that you shall succeed in rendering life unto the dead...live on...live on. What am I saying...Rock On...Rock On!

If you're working on an 8 track at midnight...

Then you definitely need some tunes from 1978! "Chase" by Giorgio Moroder used in the movie "Midnight Express" is an awesome piece. It was brought to my attention when I started listening to Coast to Coast AM.
