What happened to the UK members?

Another one pokes his head out of the woodwork ;-) Dave T is still 'alive, and well', and still living in the UK...Not posted on Vacuumland for a year or more, though have looked in occasionally. Since I am not a collector of domestic appliances, I have not the slightest interest in any...

    1985 HOOVER PORTAPOWER S1126!

Portapower I have a Portapower which I 'inherited' some years ago, with bearing noise and a faulty switch, of which the first was soon cured, and the latter bridged out. Sadly it came with only half of it's hose, but is still my 'daily drive'. I've just looked, and the 'data plate' sticker is...

    Reason to love old vacuums

Quality or cheap/throwaway?? I agree with others (replies # 19,24, etc.) that there has been a general degradation in the quality of manufacturing in the last few decades. There is now an expectation that NOTHING new will last, no matter who made it, or how much you are willing to pay. I...

I have never seen such a terrible "Repair" on a Kirby

Replies # 11/12, etc. I agree! For a non-collector that is a functional (if rather rough) repair. It is easy to forget that for most people, a vacuum cleaner (of whatever make/model) is simply a tool to be used. Presumably this repair kept the machine in use (and out of landfill) for long...

Thank's for the welcome, and a repair frustration

'Self Destruct' I couldn't agree more with 'Human' (Reply#3). Such an eloquent statement of my own feelings. Sadly it isn't only home appliances.... I dread to think what I will do when my car finally dies. It's a mid- '90s model, pretty much the last made without a plethora of unnecessary...

the rise in popularity of cylinder vacuums in the UK

Cylinders in the U.K. I think Parwaz has pretty well summed up the 'pros and cons'. Sadly, I doubt that many of the 'buying public' think so deeply as to consider the type of flooring that they have, or the amount of clutter that they have to clean around/under..... The odds are that it boils...

    You are a vacuum cleaner.

Not a 'Vacuum Cleaner' If you make vacua (pl. of 'Vacuum') cleaner, then you are probably a 'Getter'... ;-) That's one for 'Tolivac'... ;-) Interesting thought, though..... All best Dave T

    Hoover junior needs a home

Courier?? Since I venture into both Shropshire and Derbyshire on a fairly regular basis, I could possibly act as a courier, Providing that a) you aren't expecting collection/delivery within a few days and b) you sort out your own money transfer. All best Dave T

Another (of many) eBay Pet Peeves

Ebay listings 'NOT xxxxx', etc. As Whirlpolf says, these are amongst the MOST annoying 'Ebay-isms'!! Do these people REALLY think that anyone who has had their time wasted by these pathetic, misleading, time waster listings is actually going to BUY from them as and when they may want something...

Nice 'Before' Pics It's clearly a Dyson with a suntan. Perhaps more 'factor 50' would have helped. ;-) Keep us posted as to what happens next....... All best Dave T

Free* to a good home, UK (Stoke-on Trent)

New home found I delivered the DC07 to the premises of CitroenBX this morning. Hopefully he will append a few pictures in due course. You were right, Parwaz786, apparently it IS supposed to be lavender and silver, the amount and even-ness of the discolouration being unusual!! We may get to see...

Free* to a good home, UK (Stoke-on Trent)

I have a curious feeling of 'Deja Vu'..... ;-) I have just saved from the skip a Dyson DC07 'Animal', which has lived in a friend's shed for several years. I've plugged it in and run the motor for a few seconds.... It runs, but the bearings sound dry. The (soleplate??) which covers the...

Need your advice on the Henry range

Henry & Co. Benn... As a non-collector, but 'Henry' owner, I can tell you this.... The Manufacturer is 'Numatic', the Models are Henry, Hetty, Charles, etc. etc. As 'canister' vacuums, all of them should be able to handle any small amounts of water which may get through your extractor, AFAIK...

    Why canisters?

@ Chad (reply #37) At risk of hijacking the thread...... 'Compressed air quick-connects in every room'... KUDOS!!!!! AND a 5hp shop vac!! You obviously live in the bachelor pad that I dream of!! I also live in a cross between a house and a machine shop, with a bit of Frankenstein's...

What does an arcing motor sound like?

Arcing motor brushes The sound is usually a buzzing, fizzing sound, varying in loudness with the motor loading. There is usually an accompanying 'characteristic odour' of hot carbon. If you've ever heard an arc welder in use, it's quite similar, especially when the welder breaks the arc. A...
