Agressive Agitation may be hurting your carpet.

Rob ... ... for those of us in apartments, there is no "outside" to take the vacuum to empty. And I will NOT put inky newspaper on my expensive rugs. And even if I did, what's the point of a machine that touts it can remove up to xxx microns of dust from the air, only to force me to empty it...

What vacuum would Betty Draper use?

    Anthony ... ... be nice. ;)

What vacuum would Betty Draper use?

Hmmm .... That's an historic, giant of a house. I doubt it would have been cost-effective to install a central vacuum -- which would have been extremely rare back then, anyway. Not to mention quite ineffective. And so far we have yet to see any "replacement" of Carla's at the new house.

What vacuum would Betty Draper use?

Fans of "Mad Men"! What vacuum do you think Betty would use in her new mansion? My guess is easy: Kirby. How about Don's new wife Megan, in their fashionable Park Avenue apartment? (That is, IF she didn't have a maid.) I'd guess she'd want something a little more modern, but top of the...

Agressive Agitation may be hurting your carpet.

But Rob ... ... the Filter Queen's fatal flaw is that you end up covering yourself (and whatever room you happen to be in) with dust every time you empty the canister.

A few reasons why vacs come to me

Ineresting point ... "Back in the 60's, 70's, 80's and even 90's people were much more aware of how to keep something going and knew a lot more about what they were using rather than today when people don't even know how a Vacuum Cleaner works." *** As someone who grew up in the '70s, a...

Agressive Agitation may be hurting your carpet.

"carpets cost a good deal less than they ever did, so there is little requirement to make them last as long as my parents -indeed people my own age- did." That depends on your carpets or rugs. You can go cheap and get the synthetic fiber carpets that will for years offgas toxic and...

Agressive Agitation may be hurting your carpet.

Bobby is right ... If you look at the fine dirt under a microscope, you'll see that their sharp-as-a-blade edges do far more damage to carpet fibers than any brush roll.

    KIRBY VS. DYSON

Hans ... "I will weigh in on this,as uprights go, a 150 Hoover or Eureka 260 will outclean both of them, either is lighter and much easier to use , but if I were buying a new vacuum I wouldnt buy a Kirby because its too wide for most houses, and I wouldnt buy a Dyson because it is so cheap...

    KIRBY VS. DYSON

"While the average vacuum owner is nothing like us collectors, we collectors cannot keep a company in business. The Hoover Constellation was obsoleted last year because they couldn't sell enough to justify the cost. Same thing would happen if they brought back the Hoover Convertible. After the...

Please help me choose a vacuum!

Well ... "There is a reason why The Marriott hotel chain and the White House use Sebo/Windsor, they last for ever are simple to service and clean very well." **** MAYBE. But most likely not. As someone who's been a corporate director and has extensive connections inside the federal...

    Curious Question about Kirbys ...

And Dave ... ... believe it or not, even in NYC, there aren't a whole lot of specialty store options for vacuums. Offhand -- aside from the Aerus dealerships -- I can think of THREE vacuum stores in all five boroughs: one in Manhattan, one in Brooklyn, and one in the Bronx. And that's for...

    Curious Question about Kirbys ...

And also ... ... our changing times. DTD simply doesn't work in 2013 given today's security worries, and the fact that not only do we no longer have a large middle class, but we no longer have a significant segment of *someone* at home during the day to entertain in-home demonstrations...

YES ... ... that is EXACTLY my Fantom Thunder. Soon to be replaced by an Aerus.

    Curious Question about Kirbys ...

About repairs ... ... I don't know about other cities, but New York has a fair number of "sew and vac" repair places. I had a place in Brooklyn that did an amazing job of restoring an old sewing machine for me, and serviced my Fantom when it started acting wonky (dirt and debris was leaking...

    Curious Question about Kirbys ...

I don't know, Dave ... ... "Given the market these high end vac companies seek to sell to, being absent from mass market retail settings isn't so much of an issue. The high end customer, in part, seeks a bit of exclusivity, and likes that they own something not seen in mass retail." I...

    Curious Question about Kirbys ...

It's really sad ... The Kirby is an amazing product with a rich American heritage. It does a wonderful product a serious injustice when such shady sales tactics are employed. I feel the same way about Amway products; their core line of products simply cannot be equalled. They are amazing, as...
