I think the high pitched noise is due to the small surface area of the pads pores becoming blocked..

Personally I would chose the dyson for cleaning. DC01's and carpet only models have 3 rows of bristles instead of two. Which I have found has made quite a difference when shifting pet hair.. I do like the vortex. If I was choosing a model of vacuum with activator brushroll for cleaning carpet...
