    Are cordless vacuums overrated?

@dysonman1 My concern with the cordless Simplicity vacuums (like the Freedom) is that they are attempting to make the vacuum more convenient by eliminating the cord, but it can still only vacuum flat surfaces like the floor and stairs. At least with some other cordless machines (like the Oreck...

    Smeg appliances

@kenkart You're right. When there are tons of decent used appliances that can be had for pennies, it makes little sense to consider buying anything new like mixers, coffee pots, toasters, etc. Granted, some folks have to find that "made in china" matching stainless steel shell covered plastic...

Request to the Miele Company - Lightweight Upright Please

@eurekaprince There are many good lightweight vacuums already in existence that clean carpet very well. As Patrick mentioned, the Hoover Lightweight Platinum bagged is a great machine and cleans well. I had it for a while but gave it to a family member since they needed a newer machine that was...

    Toshiba food processor

Nice! I too love vintage appliances and feel they are of much higher quality than most anything you can buy new today. People tend to just toss them out or take them to thrift stores and buy something new. Their loss is your gain. Posting a few pics of my vintage appliances, including my GE food...

    New Oreck Cordless Stick Vacuum

I've had mine for a while now, and I still enjoy using it! Very convenient to grab off the wall docking station for quick cleanings. It picks up debris on the kitchen and hard wood floors very easily and doesn't seem to kick dirt around like some stick type vacuums do. Also works pretty well on...

    All this hardfloor cleaning talk

I agree with Callie. I think the current Kirby lineup is less relevant for homes that have little to no carpeted floors. One does not need a fancy, expensive machine like these to vacuum up hard surfaces. A canister or even stick vacuum is much more practical and can reach under furniture much...

    Thrift store surprise!

Thanks Garry! I may give the WD-40 a try. I think I even have some PB Blaster at home. I hadn't thought to use them, but might be worth the effort if I can't come across some used wands for cheap. I guess the previous owner had an issue with the wands coming apart.

    Thrift store surprise!

Well, try as I might, the wands wont come apart. I even attempted to gently coax them apart with a screwdriver and rubber mallet. Nada! I think they are inseparable! Does anyone have the Celebrity 3 piece wand set they are willing to part with?

    Thrift store surprise!

I thought that at first Barry, but no they are indeed separate pieces. I'll try again this evening to pull them apart, gently.

    Thrift store surprise!

    Anyone?

    How to choose?

What's your budget? I'd recommend to go to a local vacuum shop to test out several different models. There are some excellent used canister machines out there that can be had for not much money. No sense in overpaying for a new machine unless you just want to buy something new. Some great...

    CB2000 Update

You lucky dog! Is that another new old stock purchase? :)

    Thrift store surprise!

Are the aluminum wands supposed to come apart on these? Mine won't budge when I try to separate them. Nor will it separate from the power head. I see remnants of what appears to be masking tape at each juncture. Hopefully the previous owner didn't glue each piece together! Also the cord winder...

    Good to know! Thanks!

    Thrift store surprise!

Yeah, will be a fun machine to tinker with. I did see that the foam wrap around filters for the motor are discontinued, but I can probably make one. Do they really do that much in terms of keeping whatever gets past the bag from getting to the motor?

    Thrift store surprise!

Thanks! I do like the onboard tool caddy. When I say compact, I mean it’s size to weight ratio. I wouldn’t have thought it was so heavy for its size until I lifted it.

    Thrift store surprise!

Came across this at my local Goodwill today and it was too pretty to pass up! A Hoover Celebrity IV ‘Deluxe.’ Appears to be in nice shape. It is surprisingly heavy for a compact cleaner, but I love the two-tone color scheme!

What would Hyacinth Bouquet think of Dysons?

Hyacinth would undoubtedly have the best that Richard could afford and she'd be sure to set up the traffic cones with the "delivery imminent" sign :) Once the delivery men arrived with her vacuum, she'd insist on them removing their shoes as not to scuff her woodblock!
