The Sanitaires are just as bad with belts, sadly. I had one to clean my church a few years back, and it ate through belts regularly. I'd say anything made by Whirlpool with the top mounted lint filter. Whirlpool makes Mautag, Kenmore, etc. as well. Very durable, fast drying, and quiet. I wouldn't go for any of the higher end models with electronic controls, not as good in my opinion.

I don't think there is any seals on the soleplate, and the hose is on correctly. I don't think it's terribly loud though, but it does have excellent suction through the hose.

If your belt burned through, replace the pulley that it rides on- over time they wear away until the belt isn't held at the proper tension anymore. The part is only a couple $ and easy to change.
