Covid-19: Are your local vac shops open?

Still Open in Nashville Our one remaining vacuum store in Nashville is still open; I called and talked to the owner last week. I'm guessing because they are considered "essential", though retail businesses were allowed to reopen yesterday here.

Time to take the Miele plunge

I recently sold my faithful Capricorn and acquired a compact C2 in good shape. I was hoping I would like it since it’s so small and maneuverable. Yeah, not so much. I guess I’m spoiled. I really miss the controls on the handle. So, it’s time to take the plunge and go all out. But, I can’t decide...

    Filthy Riccar Vibrance

Bag chamber Yes! They’re so hard to clean! I disassembled the entire thing and put it all in my slop sink with Tide. The key is using a detail brush. Soft, long hairs made for detailing cars—let’s you get down in every crevice.

    Filthy Riccar Vibrance

Agreed Yeah, the bag is only held on by friction. A bag dock would be nice, but I think this was an entry level machine. Still can’t go over how much suction it has through the hose!

    Filthy Riccar Vibrance

Scored a 2-year old (according to the previous owner) Riccar Vibrance off FB Marketplace last weekend. Got it home and opened the bag chamber and was horrified! Must have had a burst bag at one point because the bag chamber was filled with filth! Cleaned all that out and knew I had to do a...

    Hoover Portapower Disposable Bags

Type I Bags The type I bags arrived today, and they work perfectly! I trimmed down the bag collar and slipped it right inside the paper bag adapter. Works like a charm. I was pleasantly surprised with how much better the suction is as well. Thank you all for the suggestion!

    Hoover Portapower Disposable Bags

Yes Hoover makes them Yes, I bought genuine Hoover bags, but they’re only paper! I was hoping to find something more fabric-like, like a HEPA bag.

    Hoover Portapower Disposable Bags

I bought a new Hoover Portapower last year, and I really like it for its portability. I also picked up the adapter and N bags because I don't like a shakeout bag. Well, the only thing I can find are paper bags - and they leak dust into the bag chamber like a sieve. Any other manufacturers...

What have you done since Stay At Home ???

Lots of stuff here Been keeping busy! 1) My Dad and built a shed in the back for a riding lawn mower. Tired of mowing 1/3rd acre with a push mower! 2) Have been sewing masks for people. Kinda got burned out on that though. So taking a break there. 3) Replaced the motor in my vintage...

    Kirby Factory Rebuild

    @kirbyklekter I don't think this is a ball-bearing brush roll?

@kirbycollector - Sure thing. I've uploaded it to my Youtube channel.

    Kirby Factory Rebuild

Replies @texaskirbyguy - I do! I'll post them here. It came back exactly as I suspected - tan trim, tan wheels, black bag, bag guard, and cord. Through the magic of car dash board paint, all said tan trim became black, as it should have been! And I sewed my own lookalike 505 bag. @madman -...

    Kirby Factory Rebuild

She's all finished She came back from the Kirby factory on Saturday, and I've had a fun time making her look like an original 505 from 1945. All told, I'd say the whole process of sending back to Kirby and getting it back in about 5 weeks went pretty smoothly. A little expensive, but...

    Miele U1 - Red

I love mine Out of all the vacuums I have, if I was forced to go down to just one vacuum, it would be this one. Powerful, quiet, effective on any type of carpet, tools and hose attached, brush-roll off/on switch at the handle. Mine even has automatic motor control, which is a little gimmicky...

    Favorite Kirby models

Love My Kirby's I love all my Kirby's, but I have to say, my real favorites are the pre-classics. 505-D80. I have lots of them, all converted to HEPA bags and all restored to full mechanical functionality, though, some are still lacking in polishing (my least favorite chore). I have them...

Kirby Front Bearing Plate (516-1CR) - Dealing with Stuck Screws

Here's what I did After I stripped out the Phillips head, I soaked each one in WD-40. Then took a Dremel with a cutting wheel and cut a slot in the screw head to receive a wide slot bit, fairly deep so it has some bite. Then took an impact driver, start slow and let it hammer a bit without...

    Kirby Factory Rebuild

@huskyvacs Yes! That’s really the main reason why I wanted to send this one back to Kirby. Their polishing skills are second to none! And I agree; I have a bench grinder, wheel, and sticks too, but mine never seems to come out as good. I think it’s because they start by sandblasting the...

    Kirby Factory Rebuild

Letter From Kirby I got the official letter today from Kirby outlining the cost for my 505 rebuild. The paper says 513, because originally, that was what I was going to send in. I called them today and gave them my credit card number instead of mailing this form back in. The letter had a...

    kirby parts vent

Totally agree It's very frustrating! But, as mentioned above, you have regular people who find an "antique" and assume it's worth hundreds of dollars in super rough shape. And, you have collectors who tend to over-value things from their collection because they're so fond of them. I love my...

Does anyone cringe at their vacuum conversations when they were a kid?

Me too My love for vacuums goes all the way back to early childhood. There's a picture floating around somewhere of Christmas, 1980; I was 3 years old. My grandmother received a brand new Eureka 1458A for Christmas. The Polaroid is of me hugging the box. They tell the story that after I...
