Hoover Model 707 Motor Hums, But Doesn't Turn

Motor draws current, but doesn't run Motors with worn brushes don't generally 'hum'... They tend to 'buzz' or 'fizz', producing that characteristic AC arcing sound. If the armature spins freely by hand, this seems to indicate that one (or both) bearings are on their way out, and the magnetic...

When is a Sebo Not a Sebo???

Need?? The thread title caught my eye...... It gave me a slight sense of 'Deja Vu'... ;-) I have a whole HOUSEFUL of things I don't actually NEED.... But I'm not planning on parting with any of them anytime soon. Some of them cost a LOT of money, too.... :-( I do agree entirely with...

    Turbo Brush vs Motorhead

Motorhead I always thought that Motorhead were a Rock Band.... ;-) Sorry!! I couldn't resist!! (Slinks off and hides) Dave T

    Still using XP?

Still using XP?? Yes.... I'm typing on an XP machine now!! I only use XP for the Internet, and the few other things which I can't do on Win98SE, which is my favourite OS... (DOS 6.2 coming in as a close second) :-) All best Dave T P.S. I agree that remaining 'virus-free' has more to do with...

UK Government Pays Microsoft 5.5 million to

Old enough Ouch!! the Dresden comparison certainly hits home!! I, too, am glad that I will be gone (probably, unless they REALLY mess up) before the final collapse of western civilisation as we know it. I really pity children growing up now. Not only will they not have any 'society' worth...

Need Help On Vacuum Cleaners For Use As Dust Collector

Industrial use No idea on the Hitachi's specs, but would suggest when using ANY vac for that sort of purpose, fit an intermediary bin to catch most of the dust, and run the machine from a slightly reduced voltage. Best of luck!! :-) All best Dave T

UK Government Pays Microsoft 5.5 million to

Shock!! Horror!! Unable to verify, but it wouldn't surprise me!! It's quite amazing to see some of the things that our government can find to waste OUR money upon..... Saddened Dave T

    Swamp Coolers

Thanks, Bee-Vac I thought that may be the case having seen the photograph (Reply#10). I would imagine that the water tank/sump would resemble a swamp by the end of the season, too. Were/are there problems with mosquitos, etc. breeding in the water?? Thanks for the info. All best Dave T

    New Vacuum

Slowly drifting to machine tools now Nice machine, Steve.... :-) Here's a pic of my (embarrassingly modern) 'New' machine. The chuck standing on the bed is a 6" and is there just for scale. The mounted chuck is a 4". The Milling Head can be swung out of the way when not in use, and also can be...

    New Vacuum

Disappointing results I have delayed replying for a couple of days, hoping to be able to report on the first 'test-run' of the vacuum pump. Sadly, results have not been too good. I think the oil I have used (not 'proper' vacuum pump oil, which is too expensive for 'mere mortals') is not coping...

    Importing US vacs to UK?

Brushroll Is it not possible (and cheaper!!) to buy/import a DC17 brushroll and retro-fit it into a suitable U.K. model of Dyson Vacuum cleaner?? Or has Mr Dyson forseen this possibility and made all parts non-interchangeable??? I would have thought that with all the various models available...

    Swamp Coolers

Dumb question from across the 'pond' Why are these devices called 'Swamp Coolers', if a swamp is the one place they won't work??? :-S All best Dave T

Electricity Prices- what do you pay?

LED lights As Tolivac has pointed out, some LED lamps do not meet longevity expectations. I have just bought a 'batch' of LED lights... Some working, some not. In all cases where the lamps are not working the LEDs are fine, but the drivers are shot. Because the LEDs run from ~3V, the driver...

    New Vacuum

The (non-) Education system(s) Thanks for your input, Anachronism!! I have not the slightest objection to this thread 'drifting' to 'Education' (or, more to the point) the lack of it in schools on both sides of the Atlantic. The education of it's young is perhaps the MOST important investment...

    240v to 110v - advice needed

110V conversion Any 110V tool tansformer will provide 500W of power, since this is the smallest size made. If in doubt, get a larger one, though that will be heavier. They can be picked up for a few £/$ at any second hand /flea / car boot type sale. They are wired 55-0-55 volts, so just connect...

    such a shame

'Knackered Dysons' I thought we already WERE overrun with knackered Dysons.... I know I was.... I managed to get rid of a couple last year, which I had been persuaded to give a temporary home to. ;-) All best Dave T

School Laboratories... R.I.P. A thought I had just after posting my last comment.... The only reason that this pump (and a lot of other laboratory equipment) was on the market (Newcastle Market, as it happens ;-) ), is that it seems that schools locally are closing their laboratories altogether...

My Gardening equipment, as of March 2014!! (Mowers, grass trimmers etc!)

Re: 'Flymo' As Tolivac and Petek have mentioned, the original 'Flymos' were 2-stroke engined. These are still available on this side of the 'pond' for professional use, and are much loved by the operatives who maintain highway verges and embankments, since they can be used continually on steep...

My Gardening equipment, as of March 2014!! (Mowers, grass trimmers etc!)

A little advice, if I may.... The strimmer shown in Reply#7 is of the better design, and worth preserving. The engine is 'two-stroke' and, as such, self lubricating. The casing at the bottom of the shaft contains a bevel gear which MUST be kept well greased. There should be a 12mm (or...

    New Vacuum Cleaner...

'Two cents' worth' Thanks for the review, Hi-Lo, it's not often that I look at 'new' products. It appears to have been quite well-designed, and has a practical range of accessories. :-) If they have reasonable longevity, I'll look out for one when they become available on the 'second-hand'...
