The side chamber is the first stage cyclone (Vax call it the primary separator) larger debris gets flung into the main bin, hair tends to get wrapped round the cone unfortunately.

Post motor HEPA in the wheel this is a weakness with this model and the cover has a habit of falling off in use and the filter pops out so you can be vacuuming without any post motor filter until you notice!

I do as advised in the operating instructions, all my bagless cleaners say empty when the dirt reaches the MAX line but they all have decent cyclone systems. If I had one of those horriable pleated filter in the bin types I'd be emptying and tapping the filter after every use. Dan

The thing with Shake n Vac is I hate the smell lol the scent is just sort of chemically/overpowering. I use my Polti Steam Cleaner to give the carpets a quick freshen up.
