The way EVERY old Hoover dealer taught me to seat the carbon brushes is to run the machine with new carbons in it for 15 minutes with no belt atached, then raise the front of the sweeper off the floor so the agitator will not contact the floor and run another 15 with the belt on.

Im going to try and get mine to the bench grinder and gently work away at the rubber to see if i can make it small enough to fit into the connector and still hold tight...

You would need to remove the very end cuff that fits inside the machine to make it work. I have been working on adapting one for a while and instead if spending time to grind down the electrical plug to fir the canister socket I finally got the right hose.
