The Aerus/Electrolux uprights are very good in my opinion (for carpet cleaning primarily). I found an older Epic model a year or so ago at a thrift store for $10, that was about as dirty as I'd seen any vacuum. Whoever used it never bothered to check the bag and continued to vacuum, overfilling...

I think the OP has his mind set on an upright. No disrespect at all to him, but for a 90-year old homeowner and/or housekeeper, I would stick with the lightest option, maybe even a basic upright with attachments from a big box store like someone mentioned. I can't see his great-grandfather...

I use the Perfect brand cloth bags in mine and they seem to filter well. I was tempted to buy the Guardian Platinum last weekend after I tested it out, but I wish Aerus had stuck with the C style bags that they have been using for decades instead of creating a machine that takes a special bag.

The Lux Legacy is just the rebadged Epic series from the late 90s. Did they make any improvements to these machines? I have the Epic 6500 SR and its a nice vacuum, however, I've never likes those chunky plastic wands. The metal wands on the classic were much better in my opinion.

Fair enough, but you should definitely visit a vacuum store and see if they have any swivel type models.

Is the choice to go bagless yours or hers? Not all vacuum bags are expensive, especially if you buy them online. For a small carpeted apartment, perhaps the cheap vacuums will suffice. If it were my mom, I'd go to a vacuum store and see what used models they have and you can try them out...

@compddd - If I were you, I would check out the offerings at a vacuum repair facility. Most have previously used units for sale I'm sure they would be glad to let you try out. Don't bother with a bagless machine. They typically don't last very long and can be a pain to clean out on a regular...
