Vacosaurus,  I think you have that backwards!    Older homes were smaller, and thus needed less cord length to clean them.it's then newer houses you want to watch out for, they got big! 

Calem! I'm surprised you of all people wouldn't use KIRBY ODORIFIC II! I use it for all my vacuums, just soak a cotton ball in the stuff and the air smells wonderful! It lasts forever, too, I'm STILL on my first bottle I bought a year ago!
