What's "The Vacuum" of the 2010s?

superocd Yup, I remember being around plenty of Allis-Chalmers transformers in substations back in the day (I'm in the electrical field). Siemens bought their power distribution unit years ago. They did a lot of power plants in their time, too.

Robot Vacuum Cleaners - Novelty or Useful Tool?

Lol! With the way our German Shepherd sheds, we'd have to empty out the bin every 10 minutes!

Dyson to move HQ from UK to Singapore

@vacuumdevil Do I see a bottle of talcum powder in that first picture? I'd like to see what would happen to a Dyson that was fed a steady diet of that!

Is the Riccar Sunburst the same vac as the Bissesl Zing?

Don't swear off local vac stores just yet I don't think the store gouged you on the price of that Riccar. What you did was pay more for the Riccar name. With that comes much better support after the sale than Bissell would ever offer, and most likely a better warranty. The consumer has to...

    Who has a daily driver?

Better late than never I don't vacuum daily (wish I had the time to!), but I use my Epic 6500SR the most. I use it for our living room (which has laminate floors and an area rug). I've been using the hard floor tool that came with my Avalir with it, and it works great (aside from one of the...

    Sears Files for Bankruptcy

Montgomery Ward's was the main anchor of the mall near us growing up. My father had some Ward's "Powr-Kraft" tools, and I can remember seeing radios and TV's branded as "Airline". I remember when they started the whole "Electric Avenue" concept, and started offering brands like Fisher...

    Miele S5210 Euro vac

Your electrician friend is right about the cord; since the machine is designed to run at 220V, it's going to draw more amps when running at 120V, necessitating the use of a cord with heavier gauge wires. The cord that it came with is probably either 18 or 20 gauge, so you'll probably have to...

Are canister vacuums in terminal decline?

Our Epic 6500 is the most-used vacuum in my collection. We have hard floors throughout the living area, and an area rug in the living room. One big advantage it has over an upright is the ability to get into tight spaces and under furniture. The only thing I don't like about it is how small...

    Kirby ultimate carpet cleaner?

They may not filter the best but not much matches their airflow and agitation. And, they filter good enough for me. I have a house full of allergy-sufferers, and the Kirby doesn't bother them. You can't beat the look of a freshly-Kirby'ed carpet. Not surprising that the Royal gets similar...

What is the worst vacuum from the past 20-ish years?

Tough to name just one There have been so many terrible vacuums made recently! Dyson may be the worst, on a price-per-performance basis. Sharks aren't great, either, but they're better than most Dysons, for about half the price.

    Favorite Straight Suction Vacuum made?

Yeah, I'm not sure anything would destroy a vacuum faster than using it in a restaurant. My Legend II looked like it was used in a restaurant; there was so much grease built-up and caked-up in the nozzle and fan chamber. Took forever to clean all of that out.

What vacuum do you recommend for the car?

I'll second what Barry said about the Electrolux. I use my Epic 6500SR with the Sidekick II. I used to use the ShopVac, but it's hard to beat using a powered brushroll for cleaning the carpet. Heck, I use the full-sized power head to clean my wife's van; it has a flat floor once the seats...
