The Eureka Vacuum Cleaner Company was founded in 1909 by Fred Wardell and incorporated in the State of Michigan on this day in 1910.

Like Ford, Chrysler, Chalmers, Fisher coach/body, Marquette, Cadillac, etc., and Motown, Eureka began in Detroit. Packard did not. Warren Ohio actually. Fleetwood body in Pa. Flint was the original GM town of Buick and Chevrolet. Then Oakland became Pontiac there. Oldsmobile in Lansing. Parts divisions sprung up mainly in central Indiana, also Harrison NY, Rochester, Dayton Ohio along with GM Frigidaire.
Eureka moved to Bloomington and became owned by the Williams Oil-O-Matic heating burner co. acquisition.

Eureka vacuums were the one vacuum that I never saw destroyed. When I got my first apartment, I went to a vacuum store and bought a used Eureka trade-in for $40. I still have it and it still works great. My parent's original personal Eureka was baby blue and I remember as a kid standing on the head of the upright and pushing on the handle without pushing the release--the amount of stress that thing took was amazing.

Oh absolutely Paul! The only problem with the steel bodied Eureka upright was that the fan was exposed to the dirt path. The fan was white metal and if any pennies or hard objects were sucked up, the fins broke off reducing suction which wasn't great to begin with. It was a $6 part, and later fans were plastic.

I think you were replying to Samir, but just wondering how the plastic fans fared (taking for granted that they were Lexan and not Kevlar).

I might have a terrible memory but was there any other Eurekas that had the anniversary logo on it? I know this Bravo model had one on (I actually was the one who requested this video).



Eureka has been or was my second favorite brand (I'd say Lindhaus now has that honor of being my second favorite modern brand today). Nowadays I could care less about them. There's not a single Eureka I'd buy anymore today, I did bought a Mighty Mite a few years ago but sold it when I found out it could not fit a HEPA filter on like they used to. I'm at least grateful that Bissell is still selling Sanitaire models that were previously sold under as Eureka.

I think you were replying to Samir, but just wondering how the plastic fans fared (taking for granted that they were Lexan and not Kevlar).

If they were anything like the hoover fans in their uprights, it was just a straight regular plastic. Not brittle by any means, and had some give, but against something hard like a quarter or nickel, they wouldn't fare well after a couple of hits of being banged around in the fan chamber.
