Your favorite modern canister

What is your favorite modern canister? The one you most enjoy using, maybe based upon its cleaning abilities, ease of use, or just for looks.


I think mine are the Tristar CXL, (Yes mine is 22 years old, but they made this until around 98) With the Electrolux Oxygen 3 and quiet clean nozzle a close second.


I enjoy the Tristar just because I grew up around compacts, so the shape of them is special to me. I also find that they are one of the most powerful machines out there, and not too loud. I also find their construction to be unmatched in durability.


I like the Oxygen 3 because its very user friendly, and quick to change around tools and wands.

I love my Electrolux UltraSilencer Green! It's so powerful and quiet, and the "Dust Magnet" combo carpet/floor nozzle is the most effective carpet attachment I have ever used - even though I use my Hoover upright for deep carpet cleaning, this tool is great for floors and surface litter cleaning of carpets. The hose is nice and long (7 feet) and the hose handle is long and slender and unencumbered by other features so that I can sneak around the back my toaster over in the kitchen.

The only downside is the fact that the tools don't store on-board, but I am looking for a nice Electrolux central vac tool holder to hang in my closet so I have a place to start collecting a bunch of Electrolux attachments like a mini turbo nozzle.

Best part is: 50% of the vac is made from recycled plastic!

My favourite Cylinder cleaner is my 2007 NUMATIC Henry, because it has superb suction, is built to last, and he has a smiley face!

I also really like my Tristar CXL. I don't know of a more powerful canister. I have a VGII brush roll in mine, making it a solid deep cleaner. I also have a Sweep-n-Groom power nozzle that I like to use with it. It has a nice long hose too.

I have to say my favorite would be anything Miele! They are, in my opinion, the best in quality, performance, easy of use, and convenience. I love my Naturell, it's my 'daily driver' cannister!

I like my Tristar DXL as well. I also use my Electrolux UltraLux and my Hoover Celebrity. I recently acquired a FilterQueen Princess II the only thing I dislike about it is the attachment setup. It is a real pain to connect and disconnect the attachments.

My Kirby's are also frequently used in canister mode. I rarely take the time to remove the long handle.

My wife does most of the "regular" cleaning, uses a Miele upright, so canisters don't figure into any of this. I use an array of canisters downstairs in my work areas. One of my favorites is an Electrolux Harmony, similar to the orange Oxygen depicted in the OP, but without a powered nozzle. That doesn't matter to me; the Harmony is my vacuum that I use to vacuum vacuums. Mostly, it sits on a chair next to the work table in my vacuum cleaner laboratory. Occasionally, it sees some other sundry job but mostly it inhales other vacuum debris. It's about the most quiet canister that I have, good filtration, good suction. Only complaint: Machine is small, bags are small. Good thing they are cheap. These were also marketed under the Eureka badge, so when ordering bags, you must ask for a Eureka OX bag.

I don't have one "favorite" canister-lets see-for me--My Sebo Premium,My Meiles,,the TriStar,and of course---my NSS M1.I don't know if you can call the M1 a "canister" vacuum-but it is sure used as one.

Favorite Modern Canister

For me a modern canister that deserves to be a favorite might have some or all of the following features--attractive style/color-easy to carry-tool storage-tapered hose that easily connects for suction or blower-3 quality attachments that do the work of 5-easily connected power nozzle with gear belt/reset and no complicated adjustments-technology to know when type and amount of dirt cause loss of suction thereby opening bag door-easily found bags that can be changed in 6 seconds with 3 filter layers in bag and self sealing opening-quiet powerful motor with 4 stage fan system and no troublesome electronics-cordwinder with window shade action-and more.Looks like I have chosen the Electrolux Model G from 1961-1967.I use one as bench vac in shop and for many other jobs.MODERN is not always dictated by year made as you will see from many car shows,museums,etc.To include recent years I would consider Aerus for many above reasons(but maybe not the overgrown,bloated Reene/Guardian)For less money--any Sears with 5055 bag style(did use one one day for floor,rug,dusting,furniture and more and didnt like as well as expected).For more money--Rainbow,Tri-Star,Filter Queen(messy to empty),Miele(just had one in for routine service,White Pearl,and it is Quality).

Favorite modern

I don't usually venture over to the contemperary side much, but I had to put my 2 cents worth in. I'm a canister "nut". I will take a canister over an upright any day. At one time or another,I've owned just about every american brand of canister made. I've owned filter queen, rainbow, tristar/compac, lux, fairfax, panasonic, lots and lots of kenmore's, and, the most powerful, best cleaning Ive found is my Royal classic powerteam. Its a 4750, 12 amp unit with a factory 12 foot hose! It was the last(I believe) model like this royal made. I hate to admit this, as my main collector passion is the 70's kenmore "woody" canisters, but this out powers and out sucks even these.

Modern canister(except it really is a tank) is my Aerus Lux Gaurdian. I like how powerful it is.....

Like Brandon, I grew up with a Compact (a C-2), so TriStars hold a lot of good memories for me. Often, things we remember from childhood don't really measure up when we revisit them - but my TriStar CXL does. In fact, the CXL is a much better machine than the C-2 was, with higher suction, an upgrade to quadruple filtration and the benefit of having a power nozzle. What is great is that all those new benefits were added without compromising the traditional virtues of the Compact - the CXL/DXL models are every bit as sturdy as machines built forty years earlier.

I appreciate two things about my TriStar above all else - the filtration means I don't see dust again almost immediately, the way I do with other vacs. And the exhaust air does not have that funky "old dirt" smell, although I put part of that down to my obsessive bag changes.

I agree! The tristars up to the DXL were every bit as good as the early compacts, and just even better! That is one fact that some companies can not live up to. Its the same design, just a better machine.


I have noticed that compacts and tristars have a very unique smell to them! LOL. Even after using a new in box machine versus a 45 year old in service machine, they have a similar exhaust smell.


I use the Filter fresh little air filter on the end of mine, and sometimes put a dryer sheet inside of it. Works wonders. I always have a very clean feeling room after using the tristar. Something that only Miele, rainbow and aerus can live up to as well.

I'm going to cast a vote for workhorse of a vac, the fantastic Sanitaire Mighty Mite red plastic canister. It's not glamorous, upscale, or even good at carpets, but as a tool for detail cleaning it excels!

I manage several rental properties and after a tenant moves out I will bring my Sanitaire canister and an upright. The Sanitaire goes on a shoulder strap and is used throughout the house with extension wands and a brush attachment to vacuum years-old dust off of crown moldings, window sills, and other architectural details. I use it to vacuum under, on top of, and inside baseboard heaters. It's light enough to carry up a ladder to vacuum years-old dust off of chandeliers and lighting fixtures. The plastic extension wands allow you to reach cobwebs from the floor. It's a godsend in the kitchen, where I use it to vacuum out the grit, spilled sugar and spices, the little dried up crumbs and food bits from otherwise filthy drawers and cabinets. After all the crud is gone, the wipe down with a rag and cleaning solution is a breeze! Imagine doing all this cleaning using a brush, rag, and cleaning solution without hitting it with a detail vac first. Filthy and time consuming! I would say vacuuming first with the Sanitaire canister saves about 70-80 percent of the effort of detail cleaning. It's a trusted tool!

I've also had really good results with my Dyson DC23 turbine head vac for home use. I know the turbine head doesn't work out for some people, but I've had good results with mine. Outside of the turbine head, it's has great suction, great filtration, is fantastic on bare floors and detail cleaning at chest level and below. I'm really happy with it. Can't wait to hear how Dylan's new ball canisters compare.
