Will a Hoover Celebrity scratch up my wood floors? + Donor Vacuum

I am kinda obsessed with the chrome model. I watched a video of someone using one, (QS model) and he showed that when you choose bare floor on the power nozzle, it doesn't lift the roller up. Rather it drops something else down through a slot. So now I'm worried about scratching up my floor more than it already is. Or does the brush stop spinning when you select bare floor?

I see it came with what might like a hard floor attachment - a wide nozzle with just bristles. But then there is no point for the bare floor selector on the power nozzle so I'm likely wrong about that.

Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom.

EDIT: I picked up an orange Celebrity II thinking I might need a donor motor or cord rewind someday. Not positive if they are compatible but it was only $15.

The earlier Powermatic power nozzle, which came with the orange Celebrity II you just picked up, and also the blue/chrome Celebrity Elite IV, didn't shut off the brush roll for hard floor cleaning. As you say a strip of bristles dropped down to help sweep the surface but the brush roll does not stop turning.

The newer Quadraflex Powermatic power nozzle like what comes with the later Celebrity QS Series models: chrome/mocha, chrome/green, chrome/gray, does shut the brush motor off when cleaning hard floors. But there's no separate brush that lowers on those.

I can't say whether the style that doesn't shut off the brush will scratch your floors or not. Personally I would just use the hard floor brush, which is what I do with most canisters. It glides over hard floors much easier and you don't have that scratchy sound that the power nozzle wheels make when going over grit. Not sure if the wheels themselves cause scratches but that noise just tends to bother me.

Floor brush

If need be, you can get a newer style 9" Hoover floor brush that will fit these. Hoover still uses these style attachments with the Portapower canister. In my opinion the newer floor brush style is a little better because the bristle pattern doesn't "snow plow" like the older ones did.

Do you know if my orange "donor" Celebrity is worth hanging on to for the motor and cord rewind?

Kate, frankly the s3061 celebrity ii you got with its hose is a better machine than the celebrity QS. the powermatic pn's on the celebrity ii and iv are much more reliable and you can still get brush strips for these pn's. in fact amatek still makes power nozzle motors for the powermatic pn's as a direct replcement. this is not the case with the QS celebrity power nozzle.

the qs celebrity pn's used the quadraflex brushroll which TTI wont let aftermarket people manufacture. one the brush strips on that pn brushroll wear out, the pn is then effectively useless. also hoover made a stupid design flaw in the quadraflex pn's when the headlight burns out the pn wont run.

if i were you, i would use your celebrity QS for now, but search for the power nozzle for the celebrity II. theyre not easy to find, but i think youll get much better service life from the powermatic pn on the celebrity ii than the QS.

I think the design flaw was only in the Electronic Celebrity QS series. Because that model had different speeds on the power nozzle. The lightbulb acted as a circuit breaker. None of the other QS models are affected. Why Hoover did that. I don’t know.

bnsd60m9200, thank you for that information. I actually decided against the QS for the time being. I'm just blinded by that beautiful chrome! Finding one in good condition with all of the attachments will end up being quite spendy though.


 


The orange one I have is stuck on MAX unfortunately - the other buttons will not budge. I'll have to take it apart and try to fix that so I can use MIN and MED.  I'm just glad these great vintage machines are still out there. The new ones are horrible and pretty much "disposable" because you can't fix them if they stop running or they literally fall apart. I don't have that much duct tape.

suction selector buttons

kate buy silicone spray from a hardware store and give it good spray in each button. the plastic cams should unstick and press easily after. your suction selector should work fine then.

Kenny, you're correct on that. I have the green QS that has the regular one speed PN, the bulb was burned out when I got it, but it still ran.

I also have the gray QS with the 2 speed power nozzle, and it does say that if the bulb is out that it won't work.

It does have something to do with the circuitry, as that version has overload protection. There's actually a circuit board in there with an IC chip on it.

I did not know that the motors and brushes were still available for the earlier Celebrity PN. Very interesting!

yes the celebrity ii and iv powermatic just simply take hoover convertible brush strips. however the brushroll core itself is not the same dimension and cannot be interchanged with a convertible sans the pulley endcap.

the ametek motor i found for the pn motor replacement after considerable digging and research when i was repairing a failed motor on one for a customer some time ago. the motor is still quite available and cheap. ive found two variants in ametek part numbers but the motor is the same.

ametek 5409-31-2 and ametek 5409-3-2 are the same thing. also listed under and older part number 118155-54. these are are all direct replacements for the powermatic pn motors as long as they have the screw threads on one side to secure to the on housing.

a more generic term that will also hit the correct part number is ametek power nozzle motor short shaft or ametek filter queen power nozzle motor

Well....

For my orange Celebrity: I took the metal pipes from my Hoover Portapower and they fit the Celebrity! Now I just need the bare floor  nozzle, which might be in my basement somewhere. I'm not going to hunt for a power nozzle because.....


 


I picked up a Hoover Dimension 1000! It's not the one with the cool power control on the handle, but it looks to be in really nice cosmetic condition and it's the teal color. I like how the tools are stored and TBH I watched a few youtube videos and love the way it sounds. I'll keep the Celebrity in the basement because it's all tile flooring. The Dimension will live on the main floor for cleaning the wood floors and area rugs.


 


I also saw an Electro-Hygiene 980 on my local FB marketplace. Looked like it was in nice condition and had everything. I debated a little too long about it because it is now sold. Someone got a great deal for it @ $45.... I hope it was someone here!
