why ruin a good kirby with a bad bag, and no sani emtor?

i've noticed lately many restored kirby's on ebay that look wonderful except 2 key things. the sani-emtor seems to have vanished (which, in my view, ruins the unique feature of the older kirby's) and crappy bags mounted with a bag wire instead of the correct topper and sani emtor?

i have many kirby's myself and realize emtor's are at a premium, but if you go thru the trouble to restore it to great condition, why not spend the extra $ for a new emtor and original bag? unless its a common joe, most people who would buy these vintage machines, myself included, WILL noticed such major things missing, and pass on to the the next auction.

A lot of vac shops offered the option to "Upgrade" to the convenience of disposable bags on Kirbys, given how they were a bit late in the game with paper bags when they released the Tradition, so they just took an adapted Eureka F&G setup and fitted that, retaining the original emtor, bag & hanger (presumably added to a spares bin or just thrown out), and the customer no longer had to shake out their bags...

But, while the F&G setup is great for Eurekas and Sanitaires, it's not that good on Kirbys, and of course the bags never matched the vac properly so it looks ugly, and lastly it detracts the value of the vacs because they're missing an original and essential component, it's sad, but, back in the day nobody really cared, it was just a tool at the end of the day, and if they wanted disposable bags, it was either wait for the Trad or buy a cheap F&G setup... :&#92

Heck, they're even sneaking them in over here in the UK, but this seller neglects to mention what bags it takes (From Electrolux UK, it's the type E74 Filteraire, which is the same as the F&G, just a different name, I have told them, but they didn't care about it!!):

My Classic III has the same bag! I wish mine had the emptor and the original bag and hanger though.

I've never seen one of these before. Thanks. How do the F&G bags fit in there? Does the tube go to the front or the rear?

One thing I notice with older Kirbys is that people often don't know how to empty them; it's common to find the whole works packed or the bag absolutely caked with shit because nobody knew about the scraper. Hell, until I found my first Kirby instruction manual I thought it was for putting deodorizer tablets in! This problem arises I think due to how durable a Kirby is; as they carry out their useful lives they often pass through many hands, sometimes losing the manuals, leaving new owners at a loss for how to operate the machine. I distinctly remember having an awful time opening the Sani-Emptor on my Tradition, and when I did a solid block of crap fell out!

That show you how well a Kirby can "Pack" debris into the bag or saniEmptor-the "Block" of debris falling out when the SaniEmptor door opened.I have one of those DVC replacement bags that use the F&G bags-NOT an improvement for the Kirby-I HATE F&G bags-they are hard to put in or take out,the paper feed tubes clog or rip when hard or sharp debris is picked up.Time to RETIRE that design.I have some Filtrete F&G bags--but they still have that DREADED paper fill tube.With Royals--their similar "A" bag can be replaced with F&G-or better yet put a "B" outer bag on the machine for use.Save the older bag for collector use.F&G's aren't that good for Sanitaires-they now have a Filtrete bag similar to the Royal "B" bag-by the way when is Royal going to update to filtrete bags?Its about time.Have a Sanitaire that uses their new Filtrete top fill bag-its a BIG improvement over the F&G.The machine now performs like a Royal metal or a Kirby.

"How do the F&G bags fit in there?"

They fit in the same way they do in Eurekas, the only real difference is the exhaust inside the bag is slightly smaller (as per any generic F&G bag) and the connection is made to fit the Kirby's 3-lug bayonet fitting...

The bags just slip onto the exhaust and you fold the edges of the paper tube down and roll the retainer spring over and then tuck the bag in and zip it up, though it is more fiddly than the Kirby Style-3 and F-type setups, but back in the 70's they didn't exist, and even in the 80's people obviously never really thought to just adapt using genuine Kirby parts (Mini-Emtor, style-3 setup, "modern" outer bags (LegendII for CIII, HeritageII for the Classic-1CR and Omega & others)....

My first Kirby conversion was with my Tradition, I borrowed the Mini-emtor assembly from my LII at the time (sold, got another two later on!!), popped the bag off, slipped on the Trad bag (it was a disposable bag setup, so no replacement bag needed) and there I had a much more efficient-than-standard Tradition...
