What's the best handheld vacuum?

VacuumLand – Vintage & Modern Vacuum Enthusiasts

Help Support VacuumLand:

I have the DC16 animal and it didn't even last one year it went through 3 battery's, the motorised brush tool burnt out, and the switch malfunctioned all within 10 months of having it!!!
My friend has the DC35 and it doesn't clean well at all, it is terrible for pet hair, it barely picks up anything on carpet!! And it isn't worth the money!!

My Auntie who has the Henry eco model, she hates it for cleaning stairs but she is happy with it for vacuuming carpets, etc.

She asked me what the best dust buster is, I showed her the DC31 / DC34 Animal and she likes it, but she was like £179?! WTH

I agree Dysons are rip off a lot of times.

I then showed her the Electrolux vac I had, awesome vacuum, but she didnt want a corded handheld :( so then I showed her the proaction with motor head tool thing, she might consider it :D Not sure if it's worth £42 I think?

The problem I find with cordless is that it just isn't powerful unless its a Dyson or a more expensive cordless dust buster with at least 12V powering it - and even then you're spending most of the time scrubbing the carpet with the suction only crevice or mouth of the dust buster to get dust out of carpeted stairs. Fine if the steps are painted - no problem then.

But then with the higher power behind it, the weight gets heavier - Im sure brands could easily just produce a high power, lightweight cordless hand dust buster, but for the moment they're happier to sell a big and bulky unit with just as short running times, such as 10 to 12 minutes. You're no better buying a corded machine than a cordless, though a cordless dust buster does have some advantages if used in a kitchen to get up loose crumbs off hard worktops etc.

Argos are selling a black Bush model at £42-99, so priced because it comes with a clip on pet hair tool, "high power" claimed to have 85 air watts, 12 mins charge time and weighs nearly 2kg. For some homes you're no better than getting or buying Argos value bagged cylinder vacuums or cheapy types from Tesco if you have just an upright vacuum and need something more compact to get up for stair cleaning and doing the car. Whilst an extension hose clipped to the existing one to an upright is all well and dandy, not all brands produce extra long hoses and some are worse than others when it comes to actual use.

Haven't found a cordless handheld vac that gets grit out of our carpeted stairs. NBV240 cordless Henry looks interesting and has swappable batteries. Not a handhel but very portable. Does cost as much as a good canistet vac!

I like the slim Shark Ion handheld vac…..it’s so cool and powerful. It’s not for deep cleaning, but for surface litter it’s great - and it has a nice little stand which holds the tools too.

I'm a huge fan of the Royal Prince 501. I own three of them. I've had opportunities to get plastic Dirt Devils that replaced the 501 but they've never interested me except possibly as a brush roll donor.

That said, I recently acquired something entirely different in the form of an Oreck XL mini vac that's more like a scaled down canister. There's no provision for any sort of power nozzle but it does have enough suction to spin a turbo brush.
