Saw an ad on my local Craigslist for a grandmother clock for $50.00. I called, and the owner said because it wasn't working he would sell it for $10 instead. I jumped on it. I said I was willing to get it fixed, and paid the money. Will post pics once it is in place in our dining room. Here are some pics of the paperwork that came with it, and the clock itself. The copyright on the instruction booklet says 1962, but the warranty card has a zip code on it. So I'm thinking it was probably made after 1964.

They had recently moved it out of their dining room to get the carpet cleaned, and when they moved it back into place it wouldn't keep running. They're downsizing because of having sold their home so selling it was twofold. Win for us though!

I called the guy who's business card I found in the envelope containing all of the paperwork, and he was out of town on a house call fixing a clock for another customer. He took my contact info and said he would call when he was back at his shop/home to set up the appointment. I'm going to have him give the clock a complete going over if it's economically feasible. I really like the size of it, and want to have it functional for many years to come.

The clock repairman called back while I was at work Friday and my wife set up an appointment with him to come and look at it on 3/21/16 between 10-10:30AM. Let's hope the repairs won't be too serious. I'm hoping that all it needs is just a good tune-up & cleaning. Fingers crossed.

From what info I've been able to find online our clock should have Welby works inside it. The "Elgin" brand name was used by various companies over the years with no connection whatsoever to the watch company.

You'll love the way your clock will chime.And when it is ticking.It brings a nice calm,peacefulness to the house.I find it relaxing.I have my grandparents grandfather

True! I have an old German wall clock, gorgeous, but only keeps perfect time if the weather is not changing big time and does not like everyone winding it?? Almost all the time, it is ON time.

The tick-tick of a clock reminds me of my Aunt Dabney. She had one in her living room. Her house was always very quiet and still -- like a funeral home! -- except when she was running her Scary Old Kirby! It was very pleasant to sit in her normally off-limits living room with her, lights subdued, listening to the clock tick-tocking the time away.

I always loved this song that I learned in elementary school. It's sad but contains a sweet mystery.

(There's a link to a children's choir singing the song following the lyrics.)

MY GRANDFATHER'S CLOCK

My grandfather's clock
Was too large for the shelf,
So it stood ninety years on the floor;
It was taller by half
Than the old man himself,
Though it weighed not a pennyweight more.
It was bought on the morn
Of the day that he was born,
It was always his treasure and pride;

But it stopped short
Never to go again,
When the old man died.
Ninety years without slumbering,
Tick, tock, tick, tock,
His life seconds numbering,
Tick, tock, tick, tock,
It stopped short
Never to go again,
When the old man died.

In watching its pendulum
Swing to and fro,
Many hours had he spent while a boy;
And in childhood and manhood
The clock seemed to know,
And share both his grief and his joy.
And it struck twenty-four
When he entered at the door,
With a blooming and beautiful bride;

But it stopped short
Never to go again,
When the old man died.
Ninety years without slumbering,
Tick, tock, tick, tock,
His life seconds numbering,
Tick, tock, tick, tock,
It stopped short
Never to go again,
When the old man died.

Ninety years without slumbering,
Tick, tock, tick, tock,
His life seconds numbering,
Tick, tock, tick, tock,
It stopped short
Never to go again,
When the old man died.

My grandfather said
That of those he could hire,
Not a servant so faithful he found;
For it wasted no time,
And had but one desire,
At the close of each week to be wound.
And it kept in its place,
Not a frown upon its face,
And its hand never hung by its side.

But it stopped short
Never to go again,
When the old man died.
Ninety years without slumbering,
Tick, tock, tick, tock,
His life seconds numbering,
Tick, tock, tick, tock,
It stopped short
Never to go again,
When the old man died.

It rang an alarm
In the dead of the night,
An alarm that for years had been dumb;
And we knew that his spirit
Was pluming his flight,
That his hour of departure had come.
Still the clock kept the time,
With a soft and muffled chime,
As we silently stood by his side.
But it stopped short
Never to go again,
When the old man died.
Ninety years without slumbering,
Tick, tock, tick, tock,
His life seconds numbering,
Tick, tock, tick, tock,
It stopped short
Never to go again,
When the old man died.

Cute! Charles. My clock I was given by a life long friend, it had been her parents and stopped when her dad passed! Again its a bit fussy on mounting and weather and who or how? its wound. I am pretty sure the wife was clinging to it, as the next day after it moved to my house I had dreams with her in them, handing me the clock key! Not kidding.I called my friend, your mom Trudy came to my house with the clock! Oh, no wonder its quiet here now. Weird, funny, cute. And yes her mom and dad thought I was it! Trudy would have been HAPPY it was at my house. She even said when she gave it to me, lets face it David, if my mom had thought about it,she would have given it to you not me! She was not a good house keeper! Trudy, well you could eat off her floors.Sweet old Polish lady, that you got nothing past ever!

I have one too

I have a Seth Thomas grandfather clock, and a German Cuckoo Clock. I find they do best if I make sure they are not on outside walls. zi also have a jeweler who mkes house calls and will come by when I call to give it a good cleaning and lubrication.

In addition to vacuums....

I am a clock/watch fanatic! I have several antique mantle clocks, a grandfather clock, several Cuckoos, and a ton of smaller watches/clocks! I just love that soothing ticking sound that a nice mechanical clock emits. In fact, I'm listening to the happy tick tick tick of an 8 day German Cuckoo hanging in my office here at work!

My mom's cousin had a cuckoo clock.

We LOVED it as children. WE all wonder where it went after she died.
My sister was just in Switzerland and Austria. She brought a cuckoo clock home with her. It has a sensor on it that prevents it from 'singing' in darkness, thus, not waking anyone up in the middle of the night. In the morning, when there is light in the kitchen, OR someone is up LATE, it begins to sing. Clever.
Mt great aunt had a gorgeous grandfather clock in the entrance hall of her very large home. My mother recalled how, late one night, when my great uncle died upstairs, the clock struck the hour and chimed. It was haunting, and they silenced it after that., I'd love to know where THAT went as well.

This is the clock repair man that will be servicing our clock. He's semi-retired, and was a bit hesitant about agreeing to work on our clock, but finally agreed to do it when I told him he has serviced it in the past.

Well, the clock repair man was here today and he had great news.

1. He was completely impressed that I only paid $10 for the clock.

2. He couldn't believe how pristine the works were/are. He found a date of 12/1967 on the works.

3. He told my wife that a comparable new clock would cost around $1,500-2,000 today.

4. He lubed it, made sure it was level, and set it all for $110.78.

Here's a pic of it in place in our dining room where it will reside permanently. In the condition it's in he said he could easily see this being passed on to future generations with a reasonable amount of care. The company that made the works went out of business about 30 years ago, but parts are still easily obtained if needed.
