A few years back, I wanted to figure out a method for vacuum the vertical parts of carpeted steps thoroughly. I tried all sorts of machines and hose attachments and then I was given my first Kirby. A 1988 Heritage II Legend. Of course, I loved using it "right-way-round" but I saw fit to use it more or less downside up (or at least sideways).

Great idea!

I have been letting my cousin use my Heritage II to vacuum the stairs in the portable mode.  I was quite pissed to discover he cracked the handle where the bag hook attaches.  Of course, "he didn't do it" and has no idea how it happened.  I would love to do this, but I'm afraid I will further damage the portable handle!

"the vertical parts of carpeted steps"

Known as the stair riser.

Is the Kirby heavy to use as a handheld? Watching the video, it reminded me of the unwieldiness of using the Hoover Senior 612 on the stairs.

Calum,

Yes at the end of the video, I call them "risers". And the Heritage should be much heavier than any standard handheld. BUT, that machine can do 121 CFM at the nozzle. I would guess that the typical handheld might do 30-40 nozzle CFM.

How my risers tend to get messy is when pets like to lay on the steps and their hair gathers on the risers.  Then as you walk on the steps the fur will transfer to your trouser legs or black dress socks.

I used to demo the Kirby cleaning the risers, people are surprised how dirty that part of the steps are.  Also steps are the least frequently vacuumed carpet in the house, so potential buyers were amazed of the amount of dirt that was pulled out of them.  Of course we only cleaned one or two steps then they had to buy to get the others clean.
