Vacuum my wife will love?

I have a Miele C3 with about every attachment and love it. My wife hates it. Her favorite is an old upright Panasonic from the early ‘90’s. She wants an upright vacuum for our main floor that has an even mix of lower pile carpet and hard floors. The less she has to adjust or modify the machine to get the job done, the better. She does like headlights on her vacuums. Suggestions and why?

Look into one of the Miele U1 uprights their hard floor cleaning (without using tools) is one of the best i've seen from an upright due to the squeegee behind the brushroll chamber. It won't be as powerful as your C3 is due to it's long winding airpath but there is no height adjustment due to the spring loaded brushroll. You can shut off the brush from he handle. It's oretty easy to use but they are quite heavy.

I'd suggest the U1 homecare since the homecares now have better warranties than other options.

I was considering the U1... but slight concerns about it's significant weight. With that said, am not anticipating it going up and down flights of stairs. Maybe it would be ideal. Any other lighter suggestions? I think having a hose is good as well as an on/off switch with the hard flooring. The swivel head is also good. I was thinking maybe the Sebo Felix... she might not like that it is a bit top heavy and the dust cylinder is also the exhaust that blows warm air on a person.

Then I would definitely take a look at the Miele U1!
If she enjoyed the Panasonic she might also like a sebo X4 you'll have to sacrifice the headlight .
I would take her vacuum shopping go to a couple stores and have her try a few.

After you find and buy one she likes make sure she "makes you a sandwich"

How about the Sebo Felix? I would avoid the Sebo X series, you said you had carpet and hard floors, and the Sebo X series, as far as I know does not provide a way to switch off the brush roll. The felix does require you to remove the power nozzle and attach the hard floor brush which may or may not matter to you. You might also check out the uprights offered by Tacony who make the Riccar and Simplicity brands.

Thanks for the suggestions. I ended up buying (yet to arrive) a gently used Miele U1 Jazz (yellow) on eBay for about 50% vs. new. I have poked around for the Felix on and off over several months and they are even more expensive with gently used ones hard to find. Its ok if my wife doesn't like the U1 because I will.

Interesting the USA Miele website has reduced upright U1 models to only 3... the black without headlight, the white cat and dog and the red with headlight and HEPA filter. The red one has the same model number (SHCE0) as the Jazz I just bought.

The only design difference is the handle buttons are now 2 horizontal, 1 for power and the other for the roller, while the old design had a horizontal power switch and vertical roller switch below it (mine being the older design). I now will have 4 vacuums for 3 floors... hopefully I can finally kick my Dyson DC14 to the curb without The Mrs. squawking

You can’t go wrong with a Kenmore Elite upright - the one with the brush shut off on the handle for better bare floor cleaning. Very powerful, effective and convenient to use. It’s got a headlight too!

Interesting suggestion vs. the other lead case (Miele U1 Jazz)

- Both are +20 lbs.
- The Hoover is self propelled, which is good for large swaths of carpet
- The Miele is swivel necked for more tight spaces
- The Hoover new is $100 less than I'm acquiring an immaculate condition used U1
- The Hoover motor is LOUD, the Miele motor is quiet
- The Hoover belt wears out, the Miele is a lifetime belt

The vacuum space I need to maintain will be primarily a single floor (so weight is less of an issue). The flooring is mostly wooden, but lower pile Persian rugs cover ~50% of the floor and Berber in 1 room. I would characterize the area to vacuum as more cut up modular spaces, under dining room and kitchen chairs and tables, etc... so maneuverability is more important than ease of vacuuming large tracts/sq. footage of dense carpet.

I continue to read and watch Miele Jazz reviews and keep hearing the U1 is likely the best upright for hard flooring... yet depending what is read there seems to be bi-polar sets of reviews about the Miele, either love it or hate it. I guess I will find out when it arrives next weekend. I think things look in very good condition with occasional use over several years. I was not looking for a fixer-upper, but already have an 'expensive' vacuum in my C3, so not looking to duplicate that spend effort either.

Miele H1

This used to be called the Universal Upright, which name I wish they had kept because it was very descriptive.

This doesn't get much attention anymore, but I recommend them all the time and have never known of anyone who didn't love it. If you already have a Miele C3 with the full complement of attachments, then you probably have a 236 power head already. This vacuum accepts any of the power nozzles. Also, you can buy a genuine Miele hose kit that includes an extra extension wand. That hose will allow you to use any of the canister attachments as effectively as you can on the C3. I have a HEPA filter in mine, but it's probably not really necessary.

Roger Lang, who is a YouTube celebrity, reviewed this vaccum a few years ago. He has a newer one on a lesser UK model, but refer to the one I linked instead of the newer video because Miele cheapened the new UK model he reviews in the newest video, and the US model still is fully equipped. The video I'm linking in excellent, which goes without saying regarding Roger's work, and it'll tell you everything you might want to know about this small wonder. (I'm tempted to call it a "powerhouse," but, as history would have it, Miele marketed (not made, just sold) an upright with that name for years before the S7, even though the name wasn't appropriate to its performance by any stretch.)

So, if the Jazz doesn't work out because of its weight or impropriety for hard floors, you could consider this one because you'll be able to use your current Miele things with it and still appease your wife's insistence that she can use an upright on hard floors, which sort of ties your hands.

She needs to 'test and try before she buys'. That way, she'll know what suits her and what doesn't - and she can't blame you if latterly, she dislikes the machine she herself chose.

The unit (Miele Jazz) arrived today. Of course my wife is in Florida for the weekend with my cousin for a ladies weekend getaway. I have a Miele C3 Alize with all the non-electric attachments and I've also upgraded to all the powered attachments... and now I have this Miele Jazz U1 upright in Mint condition... very happy with the purchase. My observation is the Jazz in upright is not so good with hard particles on hard floors (hard pasta noodles, etc...) , which is about the same as the SEB 236 Canister powerhead. But I can quickly pull out the wand and suck up those hard bits, which makes it more real-time functional than the C3 and I think The Mrs. will like that. Even though the unit is heavy it is easy to push around on hard floors and my lower pile carpet. The intent is to have it dedicated to a single floor. My wife will also be happy it has a headlight... and better than the C3 Powerhead, the light stays on even with the brushroll turned off. The eBay seller was kind enough to include a new box of OEM Miele bags. The unit really is in mint condition, with no scuff marks anywhere so at 40% off vs. what I could buy new + the bags it was a good buy even if my wife does not like it, but I think she will. I'll let you know here reaction when she gets home. I'm sure it will start with an eye roll, but we'll see after several weeks.

another good brand and upgrading Miele C3

Another good brand is Lindhaus, they make very good machines but don't seem to be as popular as some of the other higher end brands.
Isn't the C3 Allis a straight suction canister? I didn't think you could upgrade the Miele straight suction models to use electric nozzles, maybe you can with the C3 models, you definitely can't with the C1s, there is no electric connection on my C1 Olympus.
