Does anyone have any details on the current market share of the various vacuum companies in the US? I read in a Dyson job posting that they are currently in one out of every ten homes in America, and it made me curious about the other companies. I imagine cheaper Big Box vacuums have a large hunk - shark, bissell, etc. What I find interesting is it seems like many, many people, regardless of income in my area have high end vacuums. I suppose those would be the most interesting numbers from across the country. What percentage of homes have a Rainbow, Kirby, or Aerus vacuum, for example. Thanks for any insight.

Not surprised that Bissell are so high in the US. They do say they are the #1 brand in north America. I like Bissell products. They are inexpensive, effective and easy to use. I have a big green deep cleaner which is the best carpet washer I have ever used. Keep meaning to make a thread on it.

If Bissell could sell a few of their models they sell in the US in the UK, that would help their market share over here dramatically as they only have 2 models to choose from at the moment.

Interesting story on the Big Green Machine shampooer being the best ever used. I like their shampoo systems too.

The cheap commodity vacuums dominate market share due to the sheer numbers of replacement vacuums sold. Keep in mind these machines are designed to fail within a few years. If people abuse them, and most do, they will fail even quicker. So they must run to the store to buy a new one every 2 or 3 years. The door-to-door vacuums last far longer and it's difficult to tell how many are sold. Because they last longer, they don't need to buy a new one very often, so fewer are sold. However, the household owning it gets the use of it for 20 years and never has to buy a Walmart Vac. A person might go and buy a Bissell and 2 weeks later a Rainbow guy comes by and sells him a Rainbow, however the Bissell gets recorded by the barcode scanner at Walmart, while the Rainbow isn't. A better way is to survey households to see what machine they use. A lot of households will have a high-end machine while some of their neighbors have bought 3 Hoovers in last 10 years.

Thanks Christopher

That makes sense- I wish there were more public numbers on the door-to-door companies' annual sales. I suppose their sales haven't really weakened since they still use the same sales model that many believe is outdated.

It would be cool to know

what the door to door vac stats are. I know I've told several people I have a Rainbow over the past few years and most of them had NO clue what it was.
