A recent attic clean out brought in some interesting vacs and parts from one home that might tell us something of yesterdays vacuum industry and their customers.First was rug and floor nozzles from an Electrolux Mo XXX.Then a Kirby 518 with ALL parts. And a Hoover Dial-a-Matic with attachments and BOXES and a Regina ElektrickBroom. We might imagine a young couple in one of millions of small post war homes in which thousands of Elux salesmen would demo and sell. Then after installing carpet the Kirby man knocks at the door. After seeing the quality and the cleaning it does on the carpet it is purchased and used for years with a new bag and cord in the late 60s.After a few more years and some problems that could be fixed we can imagine our now older couple in one of 2 new shopping centers in town.At the vacuum display at the small dept store(at this time only a few in Ark had shopped at a place called WalMart)they see a modern attractive vac from a famous name and take home and unpack a DAM & atts.Would the fact that this had a throw away bag have been a reason to buy?And then wanting something quick and easy they may have walked through the new catalog showroom store carrying a clip board to list the item they wanted that would be delivered to the front counter.Having extra storage and remembering the depression the Kirby was kept.Did the Mo XXX go to the garage with only its small atts to be worn out and sadly discarded?Do their grandchildren go to WalMart every 3-6 months for a new bagless Chinese vacuum?Do the grandchildren even know how to clean & cook & garden & maintain a house?
