I've often wondered how do you use that Kenmore tank on a cart. Would it tip over if you pulled on the hose? Did you have to keep pushing it around with the upright handle?

Imagine a dog on a leash. It's balanced unless you pull hard in any direction throwing it off balance.

I don’t think the Kenmore Kart vacs were ever meant to be pulled by the hose while it is still on the cart. Either you position the cart in one spot before starting to vacuum (like the old GE Swivel Top or Airway “tower-style” vac), or you remove the cleaner from the cart and lie it down on its belly before starting to vacuum.

But I am sure that our friend KenKart would be able to answer this question better than me! :-D

Only the very last square models with PowerMate outlets of about 1960 were meant to be removed from cart.These were great for hose/attachment storage and moving from closet through house but could be a bit awkward at times.This was a time when average houses and rooms in them were smaller.The last round tank KenKarts and later had hose horizonal instead of vertical and improved wheels.

The whole idea

Behind the Ken Kart was it was easy to store, and in postwar small tract homes, like Levittown, storage space was at a minimum, this design let the vacuum, hose and all attachments to take up a minimum of space.

According to the instruction manual that came with my Lakewood Green (side hose connection) KenKart, you could lay them on the ground so the handle touched the floor in front. You could pull the entire machine (still attached to the cart) around the room, although it would be very long and hard to maneuver like that.
