Hey everyone,
I always thought that the Hoover Convertable styles and the Eureka Sanitaire style vacuums were really good carpet cleaners but poor above carpet cleaners. I was always told that they created a lot of air flow in combination with the brushroll, however, with the just the fan going they were not that powerful; as in the case with using the attachments. In essence I was always told that the brush made the difference. Is that what you guys always heard too?
Also, it seemed to be the consensus that the Hoover Junior models that had attachments in the front did not perform really any better than the Convertable styles....That's very interesting considering that the motor design is so similar to Royal Everlasts and Kirbys. Kirby's and Royal Everlast models have a tremendous amount of suction when the hose is put on the front like the Hoover Juniors. Does anyone know why there is such a difference between Hoover Juniors and Royals/Kirbys?

In comparing the Hoover Jr cleaner to the Royals and Kirbys-the motors and fans in the Royals and Kirbys are larger and more powerful than the Hoover Jr.I don't have an attachment set for my Hoover 115 Jr-but bet it would give better hose airflow than the Hoover Convertable-the poorly designed adaptors on the Convertables choke off the airflow generated by the Convertables fan and motor. How are we supposed to get good airflow thru the Convertables flat, narrow hose adaptor?I wonder if a machinist could make up an adaptor I envision for the Convertable-it would be a pan like affair that you put on the Hoover Convertable in place of the carpet-floor shoe. The adaptor would have wheels on its bottom so the machine would follow you like a canister-it would then have a round hose connector on the front of it so you could connect your hose-then your attachments.and when you use my adaptor-you would disconnect the belt so the brushroll won't turn.and since its a pan like thing-any coins or small pebbles or otther hard debris would remain in the bottom of the adaptor rather than going thru the fan.I wish I could draw a pic of the thing.

Alex,

Good topic. I have always wondered what the differences were myself. They all had motors of similar amperage. The Hoover Jr had better tool suction than the convertable due to the direct connect of the tools.

I love the the little Hoover Jr and think they clean very well. My thought would be that due to the design it had to lift the dirt further than the convertable would have.

Kirby and Royal had the market for their above the floor cleaning. They both had nice tools and much more air flow then Hoover or Eureka.

Eureka tool usage even with the better converter was pretty bad and not sure why. Same size motors...must have had something to do with the fan size and speed of the motor. Eureka would still out clean a Hoover on carpets.

does not matter the size of the motor or power used
it is the RPMs generated and the size and shape of fan
low amp royal and kirbys have high RPMs, drive the fan faster, move more air
